Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Service Procedure

When servicing a Windstar vehicle with an air bag light on with the DTC B2290 or air bag light flash code 16 (1 flash followed by 6 flashes), always use the latest version of the Workshop Manual.

The tools used to diagnose OCS problems are:

1. NGS Scan Tool, Use NGS software version 21.2 (red diagnostic card) or the latest version.

2. WDS Scan Tool, Use WDS software version B24 or the latest version.

Use The Following Steps For Servicing A Windstar Vehicle With DTC B2290:

1. Check all of the electrical connections under the passenger seat and at the RCM module under the instrument panel. Check the wiring under carpet for any trapped or broken wires. Check and insure the under seat green connector has power and ground. After checking, retest to see if code has been cleared. (Refer to Figures 1 and 2).

2. Refer to Workshop Manual Section 501-20B Pinpoint Test "G" to diagnose. If DTC B2290 was retrieved during the on-demand self test, this is a hard fault and is still present. Connect the NGS or WDS to vehicle and read the flag code (PIDS) to determine the type of fault:

FLAG CODES (P105)

COMM - Communication Fault

Possible causes:
Loose/not mated connections under the passenger seat and to the RCM. No power or ground to the under seat green connector.

Action suggested:
Service the electrical continuity condition by reconnecting or repairing the circuit. If fault still exists, replace RCM Part Number 1F2Z-14B321-AA W/O side air bags or 1F2Z-14B321-BA with side air bags.

INT - Internal Fault

Possible causes: Non-functioning OCS.

Action suggested:
Replace the OCS with a new OCS Service Kit (Part Number 3F2Z-54632A22-BA for Limited, and Part Number 3F2Z-54632A22-AA for all other applications), and re-zero.

CAL - Calibration Fault

Possible cause: Loss of original re-zeroing data.

Action suggested:
Use NGS or WDS to re-zero the OCS, if re-zeroing does not repair, replace the OCS with Part Number (3F2Z-54632A22-BA for Limited, and 3F2Z-54632A22-AA for all others), and re-zero.

SENF - Pressure Sensor Fault

Possible cause:
OCS pressure sensor non-functioning or leaky bladder.

Action suggested:
First, re-zero the original OCS, if unable to re-zero or leaky bladder is found, replace with an OCS Service Kit and re-zero. (Customer usage; kneeling on passenger seat with ignition on can cause airbag warning light to illuminate. Once the ignition is turned off and on again, the light should go off. The code SENF can then be cleared from the RCM memory. Warning light should remain off.)

3. If DTC B2290 (COMM) is still present, replace RCM Part Number 1F2Z-14B321-AA W/O side air bags or 1F2Z-14B321-BA with side air bags and retest. Follow appropriate Workshop Manual procedure.

NOTE
BEFORE INSTALLING A NEW OCS SERVICE KIT, REFER TO APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL AND READ THE INSTRUCTION SHEET CAREFULLY WHICH IS SHIPPED WITH THE KIT.

NOTE
THE SERVICE KIT IS CALIBRATED AS A COMPLETE ASSEMBLY AND MUST BE INSTALLED AS A WHOLE KIT.

NOTE
THE WIRING FOR THE NEW OCS KIT IS DIFFERENT FROM THE ORIGINAL. THE ORIGINAL CONNECTOR FOR THE PRESSURE SENSOR IS NO LONGER USED FOR THE NEW KIT. THEREFORE, TWO CONNECTIONS SHOULD BE DISCONNECTED TO TAKE OUT THE ORIGINAL OCS, BUT ONLY ONE CONNECTION WILL NEED TO BE MATED TO INSTALL A NEW OCS SERVICE KIT (REFER TO FIGURES 3 AND 4).

RE-ZERO PROCEDURE:

1. When NGS is used for OCS re-zero, please use Service Card (Green) Version 11.2 or higher, and follow the procedure:

^ Select "SERVICE BAY FUNCTIONS"

^ Select "RCM"

^ Select Windstar from the vehicle list

^ Select "SYSTEM RESET"

^ Select "OCS RESET: RE-ZERO"

^ Press "DONE" button

2. When WDS is used for OCS re-zero, please use software version B24 or higher, and follow the procedure:

^ Select "Tool Box"

^ Select "Body"

^ Select "Restraints"

^ Select "Seat Weight Sensor Re-Zero Procedure"

NOTE
FOR SOFTWARE B22, OCS IS AVAILABLE THROUGH GUIDED DIAGNOSTICS ONLY. PLEASE SELECT GUIDED DIAGNOSTICS (SIGN POST), BODY, RESTRAINTS, PRESS TICK AND SELECT (OCS) SEAT WEIGHT SENSOR RE-ZERO & PRESS TICK.

3. Be sure that the ambient temperature is between 42-97° F (6-36° C) and no weight is placed on the seat. Also be sure that the ignition key is cycled from off to on once before performing the self-test.

NOTE
TO CLAIM LABOR ALLOWANCE FOR PINPOINT TEST G REFERENCED IN THIS ARTICLE, REFER TO NORMAL SERVICE LABOR TIMES.
