Keyless Entry: Description and Operation

REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY (RKE)







The remote keyless entry system (RKE) has two main components:
- vehicle security module
- 2 remote transmitters

The remote transmitter initiates the following electronic system functions:
- unlock the driver door
- unlock all doors
- lock all doors
- enable the panic alarm
- turn the interior lamps on (when unlocking) and off (when locking)
- sound the horn once when the remote transmitter LOCK button is pressed twice and all doors are closed
- sound the horn twice when the remote transmitter LOCK button is pressed twice and any door is ajar
- allows up to 4 remote transmitters to be programmed

NOTE:
- The remote entry lock and unlock features will function when the key is in the OFF, RUN, ON or ACC position.
- The remote entry panic feature will function when the key is in the OFF, ON or ACC position.
- The remote transmitter has a minimum operating range of 10 m (33 feet).

The remote transmitters are reprogrammable and must be set at the same time. The remote transmitters can be programmed by using the ignition lock cylinder method.

To confirm that the doors have been locked, press the remote transmitter LOCK button again, within 3 seconds of the first press. The horn will sound once if the doors have locked and all doors are closed. The horn will sound twice if 1 or more doors are open.

To activate the panic alarm, press the remote transmitter PANIC button. The horn will sound and the parking lamps will flash for a maximum of 2 minutes and 45 seconds.

To deactivate the panic alarm, press the remote transmitter PANIC button again, press the remote transmitter UNLOCK button, or turn the key to ON/ACC.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

The remote transmitter sends a frequency that is received by the vehicle security module internal antenna. Depending on the frequency received, the vehicle security module will lock all doors or unlock the driver door. If the unlock frequency is received again within 3 seconds of the first unlock, the vehicle security module will unlock all doors.

If the frequency received is for the panic button, the vehicle security module will cycle ground to the park lamp and horn. The park lamps and horn will continue to cycle until the panic button is pressed again or the key is turned to the ON position. The operating range of the remote transmitter maybe affected by aftermarket systems, dealer installed options, high power devices or TV/Radio transmission towers.
