Keyless Entry: Description and Operation
KEYLESS ENTRYThe keyless entry system consists of the following components:
- remote transmitter
- generic electronic module (GEM)
For removal and installation of the GEM, refer to Body Control Systems (Multifunction Electronic Control Module).
The remote transmitter initiates the following electronic door lock system functions:
- unlocks the driver door
- unlocks all doors
- locks all doors
- enables the panic alarm
- turns the interior lamps on (when unlocking) and off (when locking)
- sounds the horn once when LOCK on the remote transmitter is pressed twice
- allows up to four remote transmitters to be programmed
The remote transmitter has a minimum operating range of 10 m (33 ft).
NOTE: The remote entry features will not function when the key is in the RUN or ACC position.
The remote transmitters are reprogrammable and must be set at the same time.
To confirm that the doors have been locked and that the anti-theft system has armed, press the LOCK button again, within three seconds of the first press. The four-way flashers will flash once if the doors have locked and all doors are closed.
To activate the panic alarm:
- Press the red PANIC button on the remote transmitter. The horn will sound and the headlamps and exterior lamps will flash for a maximum of 2 minutes and 45 seconds.
To deactivate the panic alarm, press the red PANIC button on the remote transmitter or turn the key to RUN/ACC.
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
Keyless Entry
The remote transmitter sends a signal that is received by the GEM internal antenna. Depending on the signal received, the GEM module will ground the appropriate internal relay and lock all doors or unlock the driver door. If the unlock signal is received again within three seconds of the first unlock, the GEM will ground the internal all door unlock relay unlocking all doors. The lock and unlock relay output to the actuators is controlled by the GEM, the same as power door lock operation from the door lock control switch.
If the signal received is for the panic button, the GEM will cycle ground to the park lamp relay coil and horn relay coil. The park lamps and horn will continue to cycle until the panic button is pressed again or the key is turned to the RUN position, or after the timer expires.
