SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR AND PRETENSIONER - WITHOUT SEAT INTEGRATED RESTRAINTS (SIR)Special Tool(s):

REMOVAL
WARNING:
- The safety belt buckle pretensioner and safety belt retractor pretensioner are pyrotechnic devices. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling a safety belt buckle pretensioner or safety belt retractor pretensioner.
- The safety belt buckle pretensioner and safety belt retractor pretensioner are pyrotechnic devices. Never probe an electrical connector pretensioner. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.
- After deployment, the air bag surface could contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
- Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so could result in air bag deployment which could result in personal injury.
NOTE: The driver side is shown, the passenger side is similar.
All vehicles
1. Prepare the vehicle for safety belt retractor and pretensioner removal.
1 WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.
Please refer to the appropriate Component or System to determine location of the front air bag sensors.
The side air bag sensors are located at or near the base of the B-pillar.
To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).
Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
2 WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system deactivation/reactivation procedure.
Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
Regular cab vehicles
2. Using the special tool, remove the bolt. Remove the safety belt anchor.
3. NOTE: For pretensioner retractor disposal procedure, refer to Air Bag Systems.
Remove the safety belt retractor and pretensioner.
1 Remove the bolt.
2 Using the special tool, remove the bolt.
3 Remove the safety belt retractor and pretensioner.
SuperCabs with safety belt retractor pretensioners
4. Remove the safety belt shoulder height adjuster cover pin-type retainer.
5. Remove the safety belt shoulder height adjuster.
1 Position the safety belt shoulder height adjuster cover down.
2 Remove the bolt.
3 Remove the safety belt shoulder height adjuster.
6. Remove the bolt and position the safety belt retractor pretensioner to the side.
7. NOTE: For pretensioner retractor disposal procedure, refer to Air Bag Systems.
Remove the bolt and the safety belt anchor.
- Remove the safety belt retractor pretensioner.
CrewCab and Excursion drivers side
8. Remove the front driver side safety belt anchor.
1 Using the special tool, remove the bolt.
2 Remove the front driver side safety belt anchor.
CrewCab and Excursion passenger side
9. Remove the front passenger side safety belt anchor.
1 Using the special tool, remove the bolt.
2 Remove the front passenger side safety belt anchor.
CrewCab and Excursion vehicles
10. NOTE: For pretensioner retractor disposal procedure, refer to Air Bag Systems.
Remove the safety belt retractor and pretensioner.
1 Using the special tool, remove the bolt.
2 Pivot up at the bottom and remove the safety belt retractor and pretensioner.
INSTALLATION
WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions and notes at the beginning of the removal procedure.
CrewCab vehicles
1. NOTE: Make sure that after an automatic locking retraction (ALR) retractor is installed that the retractor is not in the ALR mode of operation when installed.
Install the safety belt retractor and pretensioner.
1 Position the safety belt retractor and pretensioner, aligning the tabs into the sheet metal.
2 Using the special tool, install the bolt.
2. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the safety belt retractor pretensioner electrical connector.
3. Connect the safety belt retractor pretensioner electrical connector.
CrewCab passenger side
4. NOTE: Prior to installation, make sure the safety belt webbing is not twisted.
Install the front passenger side safety belt anchor.
1 Position the front passenger side safety belt anchor.
2 Using the special tool, install the bolt.
CrewCab drivers side
5. NOTE: Prior to installation, make sure the safety belt webbing is not twisted.
Install the front driver side safety belt anchor.
1 Position the front driver side safety belt anchor.
2 Using the special tool, install the bolt.
SuperCabs with safety belt retractor pretensioners
6. Position the safety belt shoulder height adjuster, install the bolt and reposition the cover.
7. Install the safety belt shoulder height adjuster cover pin-type retainer.
8. NOTE: Prior to installation, make sure that the safety belt webbing is not twisted.
Position the safety belt anchor and install the bolt.
9. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the safety belt retractor pretensioner floor electrical connector.
10. Connect the safety belt retractor pretensioner electrical connector.
11. NOTE:
- Make sure that after an automatic locking retraction (ALR) retractor is installed, the retractor is not in the ALR mode of operation when installed.

Position the safety belt retractor pretensioner and install the bolt.

Install the safety belt retractor and pretensioner.
1 Position the safety belt retractor and pretensioner, aligning the tabs into the sheet metal.

14. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the safety belt retractor pretensioner electrical connector.
15. Connect the safety belt retractor pretensioner electrical connector.
All vehicles
16. Connect the battery ground cable.
17. With the restraint system diagnostic tools still installed at the remaining deployable devices, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Prove Out Procedure
18. 19. Install the B-pillar trim panel, the rear assist handle, and the front and rear door scuff plates.
20. NOTE: Inspect the shoulder safety belt guide cover for damage. If the shoulder safety belt guide cover is damaged or cover does not remain closed, install a new shoulder safety belt guide cover.
Install the shoulder safety belt guide.
1 Position the B-pillar trim panel to the body and push in securing the retainers.
2 Position the shoulder safety belt guide to the height adjuster.
3 Install the nut.
4 Close the shoulder safety belt guide cover.
SuperCab vehicles
21. Install the door scuff plate.
Regular cab vehicles
22. Install the corner trim panel.
23. NOTE: Inspect the shoulder safety belt guide cover for damage. If the shoulder safety belt guide cover is damaged or cover does not remain closed, install a new shoulder safety belt guide cover.
Install the shoulder safety belt guide. Close the shoulder safety belt guide cover.
All vehicles
24. Restore the vehicle to operating condition.
1 WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system deactivation/reactivation procedure.
Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
2 WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from the vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Prove Out Procedure
3 Check the active restraint system for correct operation.
