Timing Cover: Service and Repair

Engine Front Cover

Special Tools And Equipment:





Special Tool(s)

Material

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Drain the engine oil.
3. Remove the RH valve cover.
4. Remove the LH valve cover.
5. Remove the cooling fan shroud.





















6. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the illustrations and tables.
7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Item 1: Accessory Drive Belt Removal Note





1. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and remove the drive belt.

Item 2: Crankshaft Pulley Bolt Removal Note

1. CAUTION: This bolt is torque-to-yield and cannot be reused.





Using the special tool, remove and discard the bolt.

Item 4: Crankshaft Pulley Removal Note





1. Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft pulley.





Item 5: Crankshaft Seal Removal Note





1. Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft seal.

Items 21: RH Radio Ignition Interference Capacitor Removal Note





1. Disconnect the RH radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector.

Items 23: LH Radio Ignition Interference Capacitor Removal Note





1. Disconnect the LH radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector.

Items 29: Power Steering Pump Removal Note





1. Remove the nut and the power steering pressure hose support bracket.
2. Position the power steering pump assembly aside.

Items 32-37: Engine Front Cover Bolts, Studs, Engine Front Cover, and Engine Front Cover Gaskets Removal Note





1. Remove the bolts.

2. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.





Remove the engine front cover from the front cover-to-cylinder block dowel.
^ Remove the engine front cover gaskets.
^ Clean the mating surfaces with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
^ Inspect the mating surfaces.

Items 32-37: Engine Front Cover Bolts, Studs, Engine Front Cover, and Engine Front Cover Gaskets Installation Note

1. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

NOTE: If the engine front cover is not secured within four minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

NOTE: Make sure that the engine front cover gasket is in place on the engine front cover before installation.





Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant along the cylinder head-to-cylinder block surface and the oil pan-to-cylinder block surface, at the locations shown.





2. Install the engine front cover with engine front cover gasket on the front cover-to-cylinder block dowel and loosely install the bolts.











3. Tighten the engine front cover fasteners in sequence in two stages.
Stage 1: Tighten fasteners 1 through 15 to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
Stage 2: Tighten fasteners 6 and 7 to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).

Item 31: Oil Pan Bolts Installation Note





1. Loosely install the bolts, then tighten the bolts in two stages, in the sequence shown.
^ Stage 1: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 2: Tighten an additional 60 degrees.

Items 29: Power Steering Pump Installation Note





1. Position the power steering pressure hose support bracket and install the nut.

Items 23: LH Radio Ignition Interference Capacitor Installation Note





1. Connect the LH radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector.

Items 21: RH Radio Ignition Interference Capacitor Installation Note





1. Connect the RH radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector.

Item 5: Crankshaft Seal Installation Note





1. Lubricate the engine front cover and the crankshaft seal inner lip with clean engine oil.





2. Using the special tools, install the crankshaft seal.

Item 4: Crankshaft Pulley Installation Note

1. NOTE: If not secured within four minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.





Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the Woodruff key slot on the crankshaft pulley.





2. Using the special tool, install the crankshaft pulley.

Items 2 and 3: Crankshaft Pulley Bolt and Washer Installation Note





1. Using a new crankshaft pulley bolt, install the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer. Using the special tool to hold the crankshaft pulley, tighten the bolt in four stages:
^ Stage 1: Tighten the bolt to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 2: Loosen the bolt one full turn.
^ Stage 3: Tighten the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 4: Tighten the bolt an additional 90 degrees without exceeding 200 Nm (148 ft. lbs.).
