Wheel Hub: Service and Repair




Wheel Bearing, Hub, Knuckle, Upper Arm and Lower Arm - 4WD

For Integrated Wheel End (IWE) vacuum disconnect procedures, refer to Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints/Axle Shaft Assembly/Front Axle Halfshafts. Service and Repair


1. NOTE:
LH side shown, RH side similar.

Remove the wheel and tire assembly.

2. CAUTION: Use the hex holding feature to prevent the ball studs (upper control arm, lower control arm tie-rod end and stabilizer bar links) from turning while removing and installing the nuts.

CAUTION: Do not hammer the ball studs to separate them from the wheel knuckle or stabilizer bar. Doing so can cause damage. Lightly tap the wheel knuckle or stabilizer bar to loosen the joints.

Remove the parts in the order indicated in the illustrations and tables.

To remove individual parts, only carry out the listed steps:






















3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.


Item 1: Axle-to-Wheel Hub Nut Removal Note

1. Remove the dust cap.


Item 2: Wheel Speed Sensor Harness Connector Removal Note






1. Detach the wheel speed sensor harness from the brake hose.

Item 4: Brake Caliper, Pads and Anchor Plate Removal Note

1. CAUTION: Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the hose or damage to the hose can occur.

Position the caliper, pads and anchor plate aside.

Item 7: Wheel Bearing and Hub Assembly Removal Note






1. Remove the bolt and the front wheel speed sensor.

Item 13: Shock Absorber-to-Lower Arm Nut Removal Note






1. NOTE: Use the hex holding feature to prevent the stud from turning while removing the nut.

Remove and discard the nut.

Item 19: Lower Arm Removal Note

1. Position the front axle shaft aside.

Item 20: Upper Arm-to-Frame Nut (RH Side Only) Removal Note






1. Remove the retainer and position the heat shield aside to access the upper arm-to-frame nut.

Item 21: Upper Arm-to-Frame Bolt Removal Note

1. Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly.

Items 19 and 22: Lower and Upper Arm Installation Note

1. Check and, if necessary, align the front end.
2. Reposition the front axle shaft.

Items 15, 16, and 20: Lower and Upper Arm-to-Frame Nut Installation Note

1. Do not tighten the nuts until the installation procedure is complete and the weight of the vehicle is resting on the wheel and tire assemblies.

Item 11: Wheel Knuckle Installation Note

1. Check and, if necessary, align the front end.
