Vehicles Without Air Conditioning
Vehicles without air conditioning have a conventional control panel with three rotating knobs.

Recirculated air mode is activated by an ON/OFF switch which controls an actuator (a DC motor).







Vehicles With Manual Air Conditioning
The control panel on vehicles with air conditioning differs from that for vehicles without air conditioning only because there is an extra ON/OFF switch for the A/C system.







Air Distribution and Temperature Control - Vehicles Without Electronic Automatic Air Temperature Control (EATC)
The air distribution and temperature control flaps are mechanically operated by two Bowden cables each.







Vehicles With Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC)
Vehicles with EATC have an operating panel which has several switches. Two switches for setting the interior temperature, two switches for the blower control, four switches for controlling the air flow and one ON/OFF switch each for the A/C and recirculated air mode. Furthermore, the ON and OFF switch for the EATC and the operating switches for the heated windshield and heated rear window are all located on the EATC control panel. The EATC control module is integral with the control panel. In contrast to the manual A/C system, the EATC has a self-diagnosis facility.

Air Distribution and Temperature Control - Vehicles With Electronic Automatic Air Temperature Control (EATC)
The flaps for air distribution and temperature control are controlled by the EATC control module and are operated by actuators (stepper motors).

Interior Temperature Monitoring
The EATC control module monitors the interior temperature through a sensor system consisting of four sensors. Two sensors in the heater housing for monitoring the outlet temperature, one sensor in the EATC control panel to monitor the interior temperature and one sun load sensor in the crash padding to monitor the intensity of the sunlight entering the vehicle. In addition, the EATC control module is supplied with the current external temperature information by the trip computer. On vehicles with a Duratec-ST engine, the EATC control unit is supplied with the current exterior temperature information over the SCP-Bus.

Changing the Temperature Units in the EATC Display
With the EATC switched on, pressing both BLOWER and RECIRCULATED AIR buttons at the same time for at least 2 seconds causes the display mode to switch from degrees Centigrade to degrees Fahrenheit.
