Transmission Removal

REMOVAL

Special Tools And Equipment:





Special Tool(s)

1. Remove the upper gearshift lever, the outer gearshift lever boot and the console as an assembly.
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.





3. If transmission disassembly is required, remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
^ Install the drain plug after draining all the fluid.

4. NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, index-mark the driveshaft yoke to the axle flange, so they can be installed in their original positions.

Remove the rear driveshaft.





5. Disconnect the wire harness from the crossmember.

6. CAUTION: Do not allow the transmission to hang freely.

Position a suitable jack under the transmission. Secure the transmission to the jack with a safety strap.





7. Remove the six crossmember bolts.





8. Remove the transmission mount nuts and the crossmember.





9. Remove the heated oxygen senor (HO2S) bracket nut and the bracket from the extension housing.





10. Remove the transmission mount bolts and the transmission mount.
11. For 3.0L and 4.0L engines, remove the catalytic converter Y-pipe.





12. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector and the reverse lamp switch electrical connector. Then unclip the wiring harness from the transmission.

13. CAUTION: Do not allow the starter to hang freely.

Remove the starter motor. Using mechanics wire, position the starter aside.

14. Using the special tool, disconnect the clutch hydraulic line.

15. Using a suitable lacks support the engine.





16. NOTE: Lower the transmission enough to gain access to the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.
Remove the nine transmission-to-engine bolts.

17. Pull the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the pressure plate, then lower the transmission from the vehicle.
