Warning Devices
WARNING DEVICESThe warning device system consists of the following components:
- instrument cluster
- safety belt warning indicator switch, which is an integral part of the driver safety belt retractor pretensioner
- key-in-ignition warning switch
- door ajar switch(es)
The following warning chimes and lamps are controlled by the instrument cluster:
- airbag warning
- belt minder
- door ajar
- headlamps operating without the ignition on (chime only)
- key-in-ignition (chime only)
- safety belt warning
For removal and installation information of the door ajar switch(es), refer to Locks.
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
Safety Belt Warning Chime
The safety belt warning chime alerts that the safety belt is unbuckled. The safety belt chime will sound when the driver safety belt is unbuckled and the ignition switch is turned from the OFF to the RUN or START position. The safety belt warning chime will stop when the safety belt is fastened, when the ignition is switched to the OFF position or after the chime has sounded for six seconds.
Belt Minder
The belt minder feature is configurable. To configure without using a diagnostic tool, refer to Belt Minder Deactivating/Activating General Procedures.
The belt minder feature supplements the current driver safety belt warning function. The belt minder feature is enabled after the current safety belt warning is complete. The belt minder reminds the driver that their safety belt is unbuckled by intermittently sounding a chime and illuminating the safety belt warning lamp in the instrument cluster once the vehicle speed has exceeded 4.8280 km/h (3 mph). While activated, the belt minder alternates the chime and indicator from ON for 6 seconds to OFF for 30 seconds.
Door Ajar Warning Chime
When any door is ajar and the ignition switch is in the RUN/START position, the door ajar instrument cluster indicator is activated and remains on until all doors are closed. A one second warning tone will sound once any time the key is in the ignition switch and any door is opened.
Headlamp On Warning Chime
The headlamp on warning chime (in the instrument cluster) alerts that the headlamps or parking lamps are on, the key is not in the ignition switch, and the driver door is opened.
Key-in-Ignition Warning Chime
The key-in-ignition warning chime will sound when the driver door is opened with the key in the ignition switch and the ignition switch is in OFF or ACC. It will continue to sound until the key is removed, or the driver door is closed.
Airbag Warning Chime
A redundant warning indication (chime) shall be provided by the instrument cluster when the airbag warning indicator is not operational and the instrument cluster receives a chime signal from the restraint control module (RCM). If no faults exist, the RCM shall turn the airbag warning indicator off six seconds after the ignition switch is moved to RUN. The airbag warning chime feature provides a one second tone whenever an airbag fault exists and ignition switch is in RUN/START.
