Cooling System - Fan Clutch Noise on Cold Start-Up

COOLING FAN CLUTCH NOISE - VEHICLES BUILT
PRIOR TO 10/1/2004 - 5.4L AND 4.6L ENGINES

FORD:
2004-2005 F-150

ISSUE
Some 2004-2005 F-150 vehicles built prior to 10/1/2004 and equipped with a 5.4L or 4.6L engine, may exhibit a noise coming from the engine cooling fan. The noise may be described as a rolling engine idle, most noticeable just after a cold engine startup and before the fan clutch has warmed up.

ACTION
If the condition is verified, replace the cooling fan clutch per Workshop Manual Section 303-03. The condition can be verified by starting the vehicle cold, placing the transmission into gear and listening for a repeated increase and decrease in cooling fan noise.
