Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair

Removal and Installation





Material

All vehicles
1. Remove the floor console.
2. Release the parking brake.





3. Loosen the parking brake cable adjustment nut to the end of the thread.
1 Remove the retaining clip.
2 Loosen the adjustment nut.
4. Remove the rear wheels and tires.





5. CAUTION: Support the exhaust pipe.

Remove the exhaust tailpipe and muffler assembly.
1 Remove and discard the nuts.
2 Unhook the hanger insulators.





6. Remove the center hanger insulator.





7. Remove the exhaust center heat shield.





8. Remove the exhaust rear heat shield from the floor panel.





9. Remove the parking brake cables from the equalizer.
- Turn the cable 90 degrees.





10. NOTE: There are marks and sleeves on the outer cable conduit to indicate the clip locations. Note the position of the clips on the outer cable conduit to aid installation.

Remove the rear cable from the retaining clips on both sides (RH shown, LH similar).





11. Remove the air deflector on both sides (if equipped).
1 Remove the screws.
2 Release the clip.





12. Remove the cable guide bolt from the floor panel.





13. Remove the outer cables from the bracket.

Vehicles with anti-lock brakes





14. Disconnect the rear wheel speed sensors.

Vehicles with rear drum brakes





15. Remove the brake drum and wheel spindle assemblies.





16. Remove the parking brake cable guide from the rear lower control arm on both sides.





17. Disconnect the parking brake cables.
18. Pull the parking brake cable and guide through the rear lower control arm on both sides.





19. Remove the parking brake cable from the brake backing plate.
l Pull the actuating lever forward.
2 Remove the cable from the actuating lever.
3 Compress the clip and pull the parking brake cable through the brake backing plate.

Vehicles with rear disc brakes





20. Remove the parking brake cable from the rear lower control arm on both sides.





21. Remove the parking brake cable from the caliper on both sides.
1 Pull back the parking brake lever.
2 Disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever.
3 Remove the cable conduit retaining clip.
4 Remove the cable.

All vehicles
22. Remove the parking brake cables.

23. NOTE: The left-hand cable can be identified by a white sleeve and the right-hand cable by a black sleeve.

NOTE: Check the exhaust hanger insulators for damage and fatigue. Install new exhaust hanger insulators as required, using a suitable lubricant.

NOTE: Install new exhaust tailpipe and muffler assembly nuts.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
24. Adjust the parking brake.
