Lower ArmSpecial Tool(s)
Removal
1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
2. CAUTION: Do not use a prying device or separator fork between the lower arm ball joint and the knuckle. Damage to the ball joint or ball joint dust boot can result. Only use the pry bar by inserting it into the lower control arm body opening.
CAUTION: Do not damage suspension components when using the pry bar to separate the ball joint.
Remove the lower arm ball joint.
1. Remove the bolt.
2. Remove the lower arm ball joint.
^ Insert a pry bar in the lower control arm body opening to separate the ball joint.
3. After separating the lower control arm from the wheel knuckle, immediately install the special tool over the ball stud before releasing the lower control arm and knuckle into rest positions.
^ Leave the special tool in place during service and only remove prior to reassembly.
4. Remove the lower arm bolts.
1. Remove the front bolt.
2. Remove the rear clamp bolts.
5. Remove the lower arm.
Installation
1. CAUTION: Be sure to install the fasteners in the original orientation. Install the wheel knuckle-to-control arm bolt with the head facing forward. Install the control arm-to-subframe bolts with the head facing down.
NOTE: Install new nuts and bolts.
Install the lower arm bushing bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown below.
^ Stage 1: Tighten bolt 3 to 140 Nm (103 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 2: Tighten nut 1 to 180 Nm (133 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 3: Tighten nut 2 to 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.).
2. CAUTION: Make sure the heat shield is installed to prevent damage to the ball joint.
Install the lower arm ball joint.
3. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
