TSB 05-15-308/08/05
NO 3RD GEAR, DTC P0733 (3RD GEAR INCORRECT
RATIO) AND FLASHING TCIL - VEHICLES BUILT
PRIOR TO 9/23/2004
FORD:
2004-2005 Explorer Sport Trac, Ranger
This article supersedes TSB 05-06-11 to update the Service Procedure.
ISSUE
Some 2004-2005 Ranger and Explorer Sport Trac vehicles built prior to 09/23/2004 may exhibit symptoms of no 3rd gear along with a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0733 (3rd Gear Ratio Incorrect), and a flashing transmission control indicator lamp (ICIL). This may be due to improper pressure control. In addition, other shift concerns and transmission DTCs may be present.
ACTION
It may be necessary to replace the electronic pressure control solenoid (EPC). Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
CONTAMINATION IS NOT THE CAUSE OF THE CONDITION ADDRESSED BY THIS TSB. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO FLUSH THE TRANSMISSION COOLER/COOLER LINES OR REPLACE THE FLUID PAN FILTER (7A098).
ALSO, DO NOT REPROGRAM THE PCM, REPLACE THE MAIN CONTROL ASSEMBLY (7A100) OR INSTALL AN IN-LINE SERVICE FILTER (7B155).
1. Verify whether Customer Satisfaction Program 04B22 has already been performed. If it has not, add 5R5551E & 5R44E Transmission Additive as directed, close out 04B22 and proceed to Step 2. If 04B22 has been performed, DO NOT install additional Transmission Additive, proceed directly to Step 2. Installing Transmission Additive will prevent the symptom on solenoids that do not yet exhibit the condition but will not resolve the condition if it already exists.
2. Remove pressure tap plug at EPC port (Figure 1).
3. Install a pressure gauge into the EPC port to check EPC pressure, using a nipple and a 90 degree fitting (Figure 2).
NOTE
WHEN ATTEMPTING TO VERIFY A SHIFT IS OCCURRING INTO 3RD GEAR, BE AWARE THE RANGER FEATURES TWO (2) SHIFT STRATEGIES BASED ON THROTTLE POSITION. AT 1/3 THROTTLE OR LESS, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT SEQUENCE WILL BE 1-3-4-5. WHEN THROTTLE POSITION IS GREATER THAN 1/3, THE SHIFT SEQUENCE WILL BE 1-2-3-4-5.
4. Drive the vehicle at normal operating temperature while monitoring the EPC pressure during shifts. Attempt to perform five (5) upshifts into 3rd gear and five (5) downshifts from 3rd gear. If EPC pressure becomes erratic when the shifting concern is present replace the EPC solenoid. Refer to the Workshop Manual.
5. Adjust the transmission fluid to the proper level using only packaged/bottled (not bulk) reformulated MERCON(R) V.
6. Clear DTCs, verity that KAM has been cleared.
