Ignition Switch Mechanical Check

Ignition Switch

Test the mechanical operation of the ignition switch by rotating the lock cylinder through all the switch positions. The movement should not stick or bind and should return from the START position to the ON position without assistance (spring return). If sticking or binding is encountered, check for the following:
^ burrs on the lock cylinder key
^ insufficient lube on the lock cylinder
^ bent or damaged ignition rod
^ object rubbing against ignition rod
^ excessive rubbing of the actuator against the transmission shift socket
^ binding lock cylinder
^ shroud rubbing against the lock cylinder
^ burrs or foreign material around the rack-and-pinion actuator in the lock cylinder housing

^ CAUTION: Do not apply lubricant to the inside of the ignition switch. insufficient lube on the actuator

^ binding ignition switch
If the steering wheel lock is engaged with the wheels loaded against the curb, high effort is necessary to turn the key from the LOCK position. Turn the steering wheel to either side of the steering wheel lock to unload the system.
