NOTE: 4.6L shown, 5.4L similar.

Removal
All engines
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
2. Remove the engine air cleaner (ACL) and the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.
3. Remove the engine cover.

4. NOTE: 4.6L shown, 5.4L similar.

Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube quick connect coupling from the valve cover. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.

Romeo engine (4.6L)
5. Remove the oil level indicator and tube support bracket nut.

6. Remove the bolt and position the oil level indicator and tube aside.

7. Disconnect the upper and lower fittings and remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module tube.

Windsor engine (5.4L)
8. Disconnect the differential pressure EGR feedback sensor vacuum hoses from the EGR valve tube.

9. Disconnect the upper and lower fittings and remove the EGR valve tube.

10. Remove the oil level indicator and tube support bracket nut.

11. Remove the bolt and position the oil level indicator and tube aside.

All engines
12. Disconnect the LH fuel injector electrical connectors, ignition coil electrical connectors and the wire harness retainers.

13. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.

14. Disconnect the LH radio interference capacitor electrical connector.

15. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer and position the engine control wiring harness aside.

16. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer from the powertrain control module (PCM) bracket.

17. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to clean sealing surfaces.

NOTE: The intake manifold is removed for clarity.

NOTE: The fasteners are part of the valve cover and should not be removed.

Remove the LH valve cover.
^ Fully loosen the fasteners and remove the valve cover.
^ Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
^ Inspect the valve cover gasket. If the gasket is damaged, remove and discard the gasket. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.

Installation

All engines
1. Apply instant gel adhesive completely around the gasket groove in the valve cover. Install the new valve cover gasket.

2. NOTE: If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant in 2 places where the engine front cover meets the cylinder head.

3. Position the valve cover and gasket on the cylinder head and loosely install the fasteners.

Romeo engine (4.6L)
4. Tighten the fasteners in the sequence shown.
^ Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).

Windsor engine (5.4L)
5. Tighten the fasteners in the sequence shown.
^ Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).

All engines
6. Connect the wiring harness retainer to the PCM bracket.

7. Position the engine control wiring harness retainer onto the valve cover stud.

8. Connect the LH radio interference capacitor electrical connector.

9. Connect the CMP electrical connector.

10. Connect the LH ignition coil and fuel injector electrical connectors and the wiring harness retainers.

Romeo engine (4.6L)
11. Install the EGR tube.
^ Hand-tighten the upper and lower fittings.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).

12. Position the oil level indicator and tube and install the bolt.
^ Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).

13. Install the oil level indicator and tube support bracket nut.
^ Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
