Removal

Engine

Special Tool(s):





1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist, For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. If equipped, recover the air conditioning system. For additional information, refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
3. Remove the intake manifold.
4. Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to Starting System.
5. Remove the front bumper.





6. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator.
^ Disconnect the hose hanger.
^ Disconnect the hose.





7. Remove the pushpin retainers and the splash shield.





8. Disconnect the transmission cooler hoses and drain the fluid into a suitable container.





9. Disconnect the exhaust system from the LH and RH exhaust manifolds.





10. Drain the engine oil.





11. Disconnect the oil cooler coolant hoses and position aside.





12. Remove and discard the oil filter.





13. CAUTION: A new oil cooler must be installed or severe damage to the engine can occur.

CAUTION: If metal or aluminum debris is present in the oil cooler, mechanical concerns exist.

Remove and inspect the oil cooler.
^ Discard the oil cooler.





14. Remove the 2 bolts and the flexplate inspection cover.





15. Remove the cylinder block opening cover.





16. Remove and discard the 4 torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.
^ Rotate the crankshaft to access all of the torque converter nuts.





17. Disconnect the shift cable from the mounting bracket and shift linkage.





18. Remove the 2 transmission-to-engine bolts and position the shifter cable aside.





19. Remove the RH lower transmission-to-engine bolt.





20. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

Remove the 4 engine support insulator nuts.





21. Disconnect the power steering reservoir hose and the power steering pressure tube at the power steering pump.
^ Allow the fluid to drain into a drain pan.





22. Remove the nut and position the transmission fluid cooler support bracket aside.





23. If equipped, remove the 3 bolts and position the A/C compressor aside.
24. Remove the valance panel.





25. Disconnect the upper radiator hose and the degas bottle hose from the radiator.





26. CAUTION: The large clutch assembly nut has a right-hand thread and must be rotated counterclockwise to remove it.

Using the special tools, remove the fan blade and the fan clutch.





27. Disconnect the degas bottle hose retainer from the fan shroud.





28. Remove the fan shroud, fan and fan clutch.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Lift the fan shroud, fan and fan clutch from the vehicle.





29. NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.

Remove the 4 bolts and the radiator support brackets.





30. Remove the radiator from the vehicle.





31. If equipped, disconnect the A/C pressure cutoff switch electrical connector.





32. CAUTION: Use a wrench on each side of the fitting to prevent damage to the A/C fitting.

If equipped, disconnect the compressor suction tube.





33. CAUTION: Use a wrench on each side of the fitting to prevent damage to the A/C fitting.

If equipped, disconnect the condenser core refrigerant tubes.
1 Disconnect the compressor discharge tube.
2 Disconnect the condenser-to-evaporator tube.





34. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

If equipped, remove the A/C condenser core.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the A/C condenser brackets.
3 Remove the A/C condenser core.





35. Set the hood latch aside.
1 Remove the hood latch bolts.
2 Disengage the cable routing clip.





36. Remove the bolts and set the power steering reservoir aside.





37. NOTE: Cover removed for clarity.

Remove the nuts and the battery feed cable at the power distribution box.





38. Disengage the harness routing clips and position aside the battery feed wiring harness.





39. If equipped, disconnect the air temperature sensor electrical connector.





40. Disconnect the front impact severity sensor electrical connector.





41. Disconnect the horn electrical connector.





42. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

Remove the 8 bolts and the upper radiator support.





43. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

Remove the pin-type retainers and the RH and LH air deflectors.





44. Set aside the LH side of the headlamp dash panel junction wiring harness.
1 Remove the bolt.
2 Disengage the routing clips.





45. Set aside the RH side of the headlamp dash panel junction wiring harness.
1 Disconnect the electrical connector.
2 Remove the bolt.
3 Disengage the routing clips.





46. Remove the 12 bolts and the lower radiator support.





47. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the oil filter adapter water inlet and position aside.





48. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the powertrain control module (PCM) bracket.





49. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors and position the engine wiring harness onto the engine.





50. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors.





51. Disconnect the electrical connectors, remove the nut, ground strap and mounting bracket.





52. Remove the engine oil filler tube support strap bolt.





53. Remove the fluid level indicator and disconnect the attachments at the transmission fluid filler tube.
1 Remove the fluid level indicator.
2 Disconnect the rear heater hose hanger.





54. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve electrical connector.





55. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector and remove the transmission fluid filler tube.





56. Release the wiring retainers from the heater outlet tube bracket.
1 Release the knock sensor (KS) electrical connector retainer.
2 Release the engine harness routing clip retainer.





57. Disconnect the hose from the heater outlet tube.





58. Remove the heater outlet tube studs.





59. Remove the heater outlet tube.
^ Discard the O-ring seals.





60. Release the transmission wiring harness connector retainer from the bracket. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness and the LH and RH HO2S electrical connectors.





61. Remove the 4 upper transmission-to-engine bolts and the fuel line, and the LH HO2S brackets.





62. Install the special tool as shown.
63. Support the transmission with a jack.
64. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
