ISSUE
Some 2005-2008 Expedition and Navigator vehicles may experience a fuel cap lamp illumination and/or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0455 or P0456 due to the fuel cap tether being entrapped under the fuel cap or difficulty in threading the cap on during installation.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to replace the fuel gas cap with a cap that is easier to tighten.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Unscrew fuel filler cap from filler neck.
2. Cut fuel cap tether near grommet, with appropriate tool, to remove cap from body side.
3. Leave tether grommet in hole in the body side housing as a plug.
4. Discard portion of tether from inside of body side.
5. Insert mounting pin from new fuel filler cap, with two-piece tether, into hole in the hinge on the filler door, until fully seated.
6. Screw new fuel filler cap into filler neck until it clicks.
7. Close fuel filler door.
