Differential Case and Ring Gear - One Piece, Conventional










Disassembly

1. Remove the differential carrier. For additional information, refer to Differential Carrier Differential Carrier.

2. Remove and discard the 12 ring gear bolts.





3. Insert a punch in the bolt holes and drive the ring gear off.





4. NOTE: The anti-lock speed sensor ring cannot be reused once removed.

If necessary, remove and discard the anti-lock speed sensor ring.





5. Using the Differential Carrier Bearing Step Plate, Differential Carrier Bearing Collets, Differential Carrier Bearing Retaining Ring, Bearing Tube Remover and Bearing Tube Removal Screw, remove the differential bearings.





6. Remove and discard the differential pinion shaft lock bolt.





7. Remove the differential pinion shaft.





8. Rotate and remove the differential pinion gears and differential pinion thrust washers.





9. Remove the differential side gears and the differential side gear thrust washers.





Assembly

1. NOTE: Use long-life grease to lubricate the differential side gear thrust washers and the differential side gear journals.

Position the differential side gear thrust washers on the differential side gears.





2. Position the differential side gears.





3. Using long-life grease, assemble the differential pinion thrust washers and the differential pinion gears.





4. Engage the differential pinion gears opposite the differential side gears.





5. Rotate the differential pinion gears to align the differential pinion shaft bore.





6. Insert the differential pinion shaft and install a new differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
- Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).





7. Using the Differential Carrier Bearing Installer, install the differential bearings.





8. NOTE: If removed, install a new anti-lock speed sensor ring.

Install the differential ring gear.

1. Place the differential ring gear on the differential case.

2. Hand start 3 new bolts to align the holes in the differential ring gear and the differential case.

3. Place the differential case and differential ring gear on the press bed with the ring gear facing down.

4. Press the ring gear into place.





9. Install the remaining 9 new ring gear bolts and tighten all 12.
- Tighten to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft).
