POWER STEERING - LEAK / NOISY
FORD:
2006-2009 Focus
This article supersedes TSB 07-1-13 to update the vehicle model years.
ISSUE
Some 2006-2009 Focus vehicles built on or after 10/3/2005 may experience a customer concern of the Power Steering (P/S) system leaking and/or system noisy. This may be due to a damaged 0-ring seal at the P/S reservoir-to-pump body causing a low fluid level or fluid aeration.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure to replace P/S pump reservoir-to-pump body 0-rings.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
IF ANY P/S SYSTEM COMPONENTS HAVE BEEN RECENTLY SERVICED OR THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN OPERATED BELOW THE MINIMUM FLUID LEVEL, THE P/S SYSTEM PURGING PROCEDURE SHOULD BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO PERFORMING THIS PROCEDURE.
1. Inspect P/S system fluid level.
a. If fluid level is low, proceed to Step 2.
b. If fluid level is okay, proceed to Step 3.
2. Inspect P/S system for a leak condition at P/S fluid reservoir-to-pump attachment for signs of leakage.
a. If found, proceed to Step 3.
b. If no leak is observed at this connection this procedure does not apply. Refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 211-00 for normal diagnostics.
3. Remove the P/S fluid reservoir following the WSM, Section 211-02. Proceed to Step 4.
4. Inspect P/S pump reservoir inlet bore for burrs or damage.
a. If minor burrs are found, these may be corrected by using fine grit (240 or finer) emery paper (obtain locally).
b. If larger burrs or damage is found, replace P/S pump as outlined in WSM, Section 211-00.
c. If inlet bore is free from burrs or damage, replace reservoir 0-rings.
5. Lubricate the 0-rings with MERCON(R) V or equivalent. Reinstall P/S pump and reservoir assembly as outlined in WSM, Section 211-02.
