Exhaust Pipe: Service and Repair

Exhaust Y-Pipe - 3.0L and 4.0L

Material:

Removal

CAUTION: Do not use oil or grease-based lubricants on the isolators. These lubricants may cause deterioration of the rubber. This can lead to separation of the isolator from the exhaust hanger bracket during vehicle operation.

All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and catalyst monitor sensors electrical connectors.

3. NOTE: A special tool is available for use in removing the HO2S. An open-end wrench can be used for ease of removal.

NOTE: If necessary, lubricate the HO2S with penetrating and lock lubricant to assist in removing.

Remove the LH HO2S.

3.0L

4. Remove the oil filter.

4x4

5. Index the front axle pinion flange to the front driveshaft.

6. Remove the front driveshaft-to-front axle pinion flange bolts and tie the front driveshaft aside.
^ Discard bolts.

All vehicles
7. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter nuts.

8. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

NOTE: 3.0L shown, 4.0L similar.

Remove the exhaust manifold-to-exhaust Y-pipe nuts.
9. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe in this sequence:
1. Pull back on the exhaust Y-pipe to disconnect the isolator.
2. Turn the RH side of the exhaust Y-pipe completely down.
3. Position the LH side of the exhaust Y-pipe completely forward.
4. Lower the rear of the exhaust Y-pipe down and remove the exhaust Y-pipe from the vehicle.

Installation

CAUTION: Do not tighten the exhaust system fasteners until all components are assembled and aligned, making sure to tighten all fasteners beginning at the front of the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Exhaust System Alignment.

NOTE: Clean the mating surface of the exhaust manifold outlet flares and the exhaust Y-pipe inlet flares. Make sure not to damage the exhaust manifold outlet flares or the studs.

NOTE: Clean the mating surface of the exhaust Y-pipe and the catalytic converter. Make sure not to damage the exhaust Y-pipe and catalytic converter mating surfaces or studs.

All vehicles

1. NOTE: Make sure to apply anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the sensors before installation.

If removed, install the catalyst monitor sensors and the RH HO2S and catalyst monitor sensor.
^ Tighten to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).

2. NOTE: Use caution when installing the exhaust Y-pipe. Make sure not to damage the exhaust manifold outlet flare, the exhaust Y-pipe inlet flare, the exhaust Y-Pipe and catalytic converter mating surfaces or the exhaust manifold studs.

Position the exhaust Y-pipe into the vehicle in this sequence:
1. Position the LH side of the exhaust Y-pipe completely forward.
2. Pull back on the exhaust to position the exhaust Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter flange over the transmission crossmember.
3. Rotate the RH side of the exhaust Y-pipe UP.
4. Connect the rubber isolator and position the exhaust Y-pipe into place.
3. Loosely install the exhaust manifold-to-Y-pipe nuts.
4. Install the exhaust Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter flange gasket.
5. Loosely install the exhaust Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter nuts.

4x4

6. NOTE: Install new front driveshaft-to-front axle pinion flange bolts.

Install the front driveshaft and the front driveshaft-to-front axle pinion flange bolts.
^ Tighten to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).

3.0L

7. Install the oil filter.

All vehicles

8. NOTE: Make sure to apply anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the sensor before installation.

NOTE: A special tool is available for use in removing the HO2S. An open-end wrench can be used for ease of installation.

Install the LH HO2S.
^ Tighten to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
9. Align the exhaust system. For additional information, refer to Exhaust System Alignment.
10. Connect the HO2S and catalyst monitor sensors electrical connectors.
