Muffler: Service and Repair
Muffler and TailpipeRemoval
CAUTION: Do not use oil or grease-based lubricants on the isolators. These lubricants may cause deterioration of the rubber. This can lead to separation of the isolator from the exhaust hanger bracket during vehicle operation.
All engines
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2.3L engine
2. Remove the exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts and nuts.
^ To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
3.0L and 4.0L engines
3. Remove the catalytic converter-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts and nuts.
^ To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
All engines
4. Disconnect the 3 rubber isolators and remove the muffler and tailpipe assembly.
Installation
CAUTION: Do not tighten the exhaust system fasteners until all components are assembled and aligned, making sure to tighten all fasteners beginning at the front of the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Exhaust System Alignment.

NOTE: Clean the mating surface of the exhaust downpipe or the catalytic converter and the muffler and tailpipe assembly. Make sure not to damage the exhaust downpipe or catalytic converter and muffler and tailpipe assembly mating surfaces.
All engines
1. NOTE: Use caution when installing the muffler and tailpipe assembly. Make sure not to damage the exhaust downpipe or catalytic converter and muffler and tailpipe mating surfaces.
Position the muffler and tailpipe assembly into the vehicle and connect the 3 rubber isolators.
2.3L
2. Install the exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly gasket.
3. Loosely install the exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts and nuts.
3.0L and 4.0L
4. Install the catalytic converter-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly gasket.
5. Loosely install the catalytic converter-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts and nuts.
All engines
6. Align the exhaust system. For additional information, refer to Exhaust System Alignment.
