Removal and Installation

Wheel and Tire

Removal
1. If equipped, remove the wheel cover or center cap.

2. CAUTION: Do not use heat to loosen a seized wheel nut. Heat can damage the wheel and wheel bearings.

NOTE: Do not remove the wheel nuts at this time.

With the weight of the vehicle on the tires, loosen the wheel nuts.
3. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
4. Remove the wheel nuts.
5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.

Installation

1. WARNING: When a wheel is installed, always remove any corrosion, dirt or foreign material present on the mounting surfaces of the wheel or the surface of the brake disc and hub that contacts the wheel. Installing wheels without correct metal-to-metal contact at the wheel mounting surfaces can cause the wheel nuts to loosen and the wheel to come off while the vehicle is in motion, resulting in loss of control. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

Position the wheel and tire assembly.
2. Install the wheel nuts.
^ Tighten the nuts until snug in a star-type pattern.

3. WARNING: Using the sequence shown, retighten the wheel nuts at 800 km (500 miles) after any wheel change or any time the wheel nuts are loosened. Failure to retighten the wheel nuts at the mileage specified could allow the wheels to come off while the vehicle is in motion, possibly causing loss of control. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

CAUTION: Failure to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern can result in high brake disc runout, which will speed up the development of brake roughness, shudder and vibration.

With the weight of the vehicle on the tires, tighten the wheel nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) in the sequence shown.
4. Advise the customer that the wheels need to be retightened at 800 km (500 miles) after any wheel change or any other time the wheel nuts have been loosened. This is required to permit the wheel clamping system to seat correctly so that the wheel nuts will hold a uniform clamp load and remain fully tightened.
5. If removed, install the wheel cover or center cap.
