Removal
1. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System.
2. Remove both the valve covers.
3. Disconnect the upper radiator hose, heater hose and coolant bypass hose.
4. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor and coolant temperature sender electrical connectors.
5. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector and detach the wiring retainer from the stud bolt.
6. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors and position the engine control wiring aside.
7. Release the fuel pressure and disconnect the fuel tube. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.
8. Loosen the rocker arm bolts.
9. NOTE: identify the location of each push rod. Each push rod is to be installed in the original location to prevent premature wear.
Remove all the push rods.
10. Remove the bolts from the lower intake manifold.
11. NOTE: Gently loosen the intake manifold to separate the silicone sealant from the cylinder block.
Remove the lower intake manifold.
12. Remove and discard the intake manifold gaskets and end seals.
Installation
1. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
NOTE: If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Observe all warnings and cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging of the silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
Apply a drop of silicone gasket and sealant at the 4 cylinder block-to-cylinder head seams.
2. Install the intake manifold gaskets and end seals.
^ Position the intake manifold gaskets.
^ Position the end seals.
3. Position the lower intake manifold.
4. Install the bolts and tighten in 2 stages in the sequence shown.
^ Stage 1: Tighten to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 2: Tighten to 32 Nm (24 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the push rods.
6. Tighten the rocker arms.
^ Tighten to 32 Nm (24 ft. lbs.).
7. Connect the fuel tube. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.
8. Connect the fuel injector electrical connectors.
9. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector and attach the wiring retainer to the stud bolt.
10. Connect the ECT sensor and coolant temperature sender electrical connectors.
11. Connect the upper radiator hose, heater hose and coolant bypass hose.
12. Install both valve covers.
13. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System.
