Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

Catalytic Converter - 3.0L and 4.0L

Removal

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Remove the catalytic converter-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts, nuts and gasket.
3. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe flange-to-catalytic converter nuts and gasket and remove the catalytic converter from the vehicle.

Installation

CAUTION: Do not tighten the exhaust system fasteners until all components are assembled and aligned, making sure to tighten all fasteners beginning at the front of the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Exhaust System Alignment.

NOTE: Clean the mating surface of the exhaust Y-pipe and the catalytic converter. Make sure not to damage the exhaust Y-pipe and catalytic converter mating surfaces or studs.

1. Install the exhaust Y-pipe flange-to-catalytic converter flange gasket onto the studs of the catalytic converter.

2. NOTE: Use caution when installing the catalytic converter. Make sure not to damage the exhaust Y-pipe, catalytic converter or muffler and tailpipe mating surfaces or the catalytic converter studs.

Position the catalytic converter into the vehicle and loosely install the exhaust Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter nuts.
3. Install the catalytic converter-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly gasket.
4. Loosely install the catalytic converter-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts and nuts.
5. Align the exhaust system. For additional information, refer to Exhaust System Alignment.
