Steering ColumnRemoval and Installation
1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
^ Remove the key.
2. Depower the supplemental restraints system (SRS). For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.
3. NOTE: Release the upper steering column shroud by pressing inward on the sides and lifting upwards.
Remove the upper steering column shroud.
4. Release the tilt lever, remove the 3 screws and then remove the lower steering column shroud.
5. NOTE: The top of the instrument panel steering column cover is held in by tabs that clip into the instrument panel.
Remove the 2 instrument panel steering column cover screws.
^ Detach the instrument panel steering column cover.
6. If equipped, disconnect the electrical connector and hose from the temperature sensor.
^ Remove the instrument panel steering column cover.
7. Disconnect the multi-function switch, ignition switch and clockspring electrical connectors.
8. Disconnect the adaptive headlamp switch electrical connector.
9. Disconnect the passive anti-theft system (PATS) electrical connector and the key in connector.
10. Detach the wiring harness retainer and position the wiring harness aside.
11. Release and remove the lower steering column shaft joint cover from the studs.
12. Index-mark the steering column shaft position to the steering gear for reference during installation.
13. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected, or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.
Remove the steering column shaft bolt and disconnect the shaft from the steering gear.
^ To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs).
14. Remove the 4 steering column support bracket nuts and the steering column.
^ To install, tighten to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs).
15. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
16. Repower the supplemental restraints system. For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.
