Transaxle

Special Tool(s):





Disassembly (Steps 1-36)
1. Using the special tool, install the transaxle onto the bench.





2. CAUTION: The torque converter is heavy. Be careful not to drop it or damage will result.

Install two 10 mm x 1.50 bolts into the torque converter to assist in handling the torque converter and remove the torque converter from the transaxle.





3. Remove the nut and the manual lever.





4. NOTE: Note the location of the of the stud bolts for assembly.

Remove the 14 bolts and the transaxle side cover.





5. Disconnect the transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
1 Slide the lock over.
2 Press the tab and disconnect the connector.





6. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) and output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connectors.





7. CAUTION: The solenoid body should be handled with care, damage to the solenoid body may occur.

NOTE: Note the location of the different length bolts for assembly.

Remove the 11 bolts and the solenoid body.





8. Remove the 10 bolts and the main control valve body.





9. CAUTION: It may be necessary to gently pry the pin out from under the head on each side with a suitable tool. Damage to the locking pin could occur.

Using a suitable tool, remove and discard the TR sensor locking pin.





10. Slide the TR sensor down and rotate the detent lever to disconnect the park pawl actuator rod and remove the TR sensor.





11. Using a suitable tool, remove the manual lever shaft seal.





12. Using a suitable tool, remove the forward clutch feed seal.





13. Remove the bolt and the OSS sensor.





14. Remove the 10 bolts and the cover assembly. Carefully route the TSS sensor wiring harness and electrical connector out of the transaxle case.





15. Remove the cover assembly gasket.





16. Remove the No. 1 cover assembly thrust bearing.





17. Remove the overdrive/direct clutch hub and turbine shaft assembly.





18. Remove No. 3 rear sun gear thrust bearing.





19. Remove the intermediate clutch shell and sun gear assembly.





20. Remove the intermediate clutch assembly.





21. NOTE: The location of the tab on the bottom pressure plate is aligned with gap for the low/one-way clutch snap ring.

Remove the low/reverse clutch assembly.





22. Remove the rear planetary gear assembly.





23. Remove the No. 5 center/rear planetary and the No. 6 center sun gear thrust bearings.





24. Remove the center planetary sun gear.





25. Remove the center planetary gear and carrier assembly.





26. Remove the No. 7 center sun gear and the No. 8 front/center planetary gear assembly thrust bearings.





27. Remove the front planetary gear and carrier assembly.





28. Remove the front planetary sun gear and shell assembly.





29. Remove the No. 10 front sun gear thrust bearing.





30. Remove the front planetary carrier hub assembly.





31. Remove the No. 11 support assembly thrust bearing.





32. NOTE: Note the orientation of the snap ring for assembly. The snap ring gap must fit around the tab of the low/reverse clutch pressure plate.

Remove the low/one-way clutch snap ring.





33. Remove the low/one-way clutch.





34. Remove the forward clutch assembly.





35. NOTE: Install the special tool with the stepped end of the cylinder facing up when compressing the forward clutch piston return spring.

Install the special tools and compress the forward clutch piston return spring.





36. NOTE: Special tools not shown for clarity.

Remove the forward clutch piston return spring snap ring.
