Transaxle

Special Tool(s):

Disassembly (Steps 37-73)
37. Remove the special tools.





38. Remove the forward clutch piston return spring.





39. Remove and discard the forward clutch piston.





40. CAUTION: Carefully pry on opposite sides of the transaxle torque converter housing and the case to separate the torque converter housing from the case. Do not pry up on the RTV mating surfaces, damage to the mating surfaces may occur. Carefully lift the torque converter housing off the dowel pins.

NOTE: Note the location of the stud bolts for assembly.

Remove and 19 bolts and the torque converter housing.





41. Remove the transaxle lube tube.





42. Remove the differential and ring gear assembly.





43. Remove the transfer shaft and gear assembly.





44. Remove the pump-to-case seal.





45. Remove the 2 bolts and the reservoir.





46. Remove the reservoir O-ring seal.





47. Inspect the transaxle case side transfer shaft bearing cup for damage.





48. If the transaxle case side transfer shaft bearing cup is damaged, using the special tools remove the bearing cup.





49. If the transaxle case side transfer shaft bearing cup was removed, using a suitable tool, punch a hole in the fluid dam.





50. If the transfer shaft bearing cup was removed, using a suitable dent puller, remove the fluid dam from the transaxle case.





51. Using a suitable tool, remove the halfshaft seal from the transaxle case.





52. Inspect the transaxle case side differential bearing cup for damage.





53. If the transaxle case side differential bearing cup is damaged, using the special tool press the bearing cup out of the transaxle case.





54. Remove the park pawl actuator rod.





55. Remove the 2 bolts and the park pawl pin retainer.





56. NOTE: Note the orientation of the park pawl spring for assembly.

Remove the park pawl spring.





57. Remove the park pawl pin and the park pawl.





58. Using a magnet, remove the park pawl abutment pins and the abutment.





59. Remove the bolt and the fluid baffle.





60. Remove the 10 bolts and the stator support assembly.





61. Remove the 3 bolts and the fluid pump and filter assembly.





62. Remove the fluid pump sprocket and chain assembly.





63. Remove the fluid pump drive sprocket and driven sprocket thrust washers.





64. Inspect the torque converter housing side transfer shaft bearing cup for damage.





65. If the torque converter housing side transfer shaft bearing cup is damaged, use the special tools to remove the bearing cup.





66. If the torque converter housing side transfer shaft bearing cup was removed, remove the preload shim.





67. If the torque converter housing side transfer shaft bearing cup was removed, using a suitable tool, punch a hole in the fluid dam.





68. If the transfer shaft bearing cup was removed, using a suitable dent puller, remove the fluid dam from the torque converter housing.





69. Using a suitable tool, remove the halfshaft seal from the torque converter housing.





70. Inspect the torque converter housing side differential bearing cup for damage.





71. If the torque converter housing side differential bearing cup is damaged, using the special tool press the bearing cup out of the torque converter housing.





72. If the torque converter housing side differential bearing cup was removed, remove the differential bearing preload shim.





73. Using a suitable dent puller, remove the torque converter hub seal from the torque converter housing.
