Wheel Hub: Service and Repair
Wheel HubWheel Hub:
Removal
CAUTION: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect performance of vital parts and systems and their failure can result in major service expense. A new part with the same part number must be installed if installation becomes necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts.
All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Remove and discard the dust cap.
3. CAUTION: Do not use power tools to remove the wheel hub nut.
With the weight of the vehicle on the wheel and tire assembly, loosen the wheel hub nut.
Vehicles with rear brake discs
4. CAUTION: Care must be used when servicing rear brake components without disconnecting the parking brake cable from the brake caliper lever. Carefully position the caliper aside using a suitable support or damage to the parking brake cable end fittings can occur.
CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper and anchor plate assembly to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose can occur.
Remove the brake caliper anchor plate bolts and position the caliper and anchor plate assembly aside.
^ Support the caliper and anchor plate assembly using mechanic's wire.
5. Remove the brake disc.
6. Remove and discard the wheel hub nut and remove the wheel hub and bearing assembly.
Vehicles with rear drum brakes
7. Remove and discard the wheel hub nut and remove the brake drum and hub assembly.
Installation
Vehicles with rear drum brakes
1. CAUTION: Avoid any impact on the wheel speed sensor ring.
CAUTION: Make sure the wheel speed sensor ring is clean.
CAUTION: Avoid any contact between the wheel speed sensor ring and a magnetic surface.
NOTE: Do not fully tighten the wheel hub retaining nut at this time.
Position the brake drum and wheel hub assembly and install a new wheel hub nut.
^ Tighten until snug.
2. CAUTION: Rotate the brake drum 10 times in the opposite direction when tightening the wheel hub nut to prevent damage to the bearing.
Tighten the wheel hub retaining nut while rotating the brake drum in the opposite direction.
^ Tighten to 235 Nm (174 ft. lbs.).
