CLUTCH PEDAL RETURN SPRING NOISE AND/OR FREE PLAY

FORD:
2000-2007 Focus

This article supersedes TSB 08-13-9 to update the vehicle model years.

ISSUE
Some 2000-2007 Focus vehicles (except SVT) equipped with a manual transmission may exhibit a squeak type noise when depressing the clutch pedal and/or excessive clutch pedal free play. This may be caused by a damaged clutch pedal return spring.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure to correct the concern.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the steering column opening cover.

a. Remove the four (4) screws and lower the panel.

b. Loosen the nut and disconnect the hood release handle.

c. Disconnect the data link connector.

2. Disconnect the clutch pedal position switch (CPP) and the stoplight switch electrical connectors.





3. Remove and discard the clutch pedal return spring. (Figure 1)

4. Install a new clutch pedal return spring by first attaching the bottom of the spring in securing hole, then using a narrow tipped regular screwdriver, pry up on the top of the spring while pulling up on the clutch pedal attach spring to pedal. (Refer to Figure 1 for spring orientation)

5. Connect the CPP and the stoplight switch electrical connectors.

6. Install the steering column opening cover.

a. Connect the data link connector.

b. Connect the hood release handle and tighten the nut.

c. Install the panel and install the four (4) screws.
