Muffler and Tailpipe

Removal

CAUTION: Do not use oil or grease-based lubricants on the isolators. These lubricants may cause deterioration of the rubber. This can lead to separation of the isolator from the exhaust hanger bracket during vehicle operation.

All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.

Vehicles with 2.3L
2. Remove the exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts, flag nuts and gasket.

Vehicles with 3.0L and 4.0L
3. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe assembly-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts, flag nuts and gasket.

All vehicles
4. Disconnect the 3 rubber isolators and remove the muffler and tailpipe assembly.

Installation

CAUTION: Do not tighten the exhaust system fasteners until all components are assembled and aligned, making sure to tighten all fasteners beginning at the front of the vehicle.

NOTE: Clean the mating surface of the exhaust downpipe or the catalytic converter and the muffler and tailpipe assembly. Make sure not to damage the exhaust downpipe or catalytic converter and muffler and tailpipe assembly mating surfaces.

All vehicles

1. NOTE: Use caution when installing the muffler and tailpipe assembly . Make sure not to damage the exhaust downpipe or exhaust Y-pipe assembly and muffler and tailpipe mating surfaces.

Position the muffler and tailpipe assembly into the vehicle and connect the 3 rubber isolators.

Vehicles with 2.3L
2. Install the exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly gasket.
3. Loosely install the exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts and nuts.

Vehicles with 3.0L and 4.0L
4. Install the exhaust Y-pipe assembly-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly gasket.
5. Loosely install the exhaust Y-pipe assembly-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts and nuts.

All vehicles
6. Align the exhaust system.
