Test V: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
PINPOINT TEST V: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ONNormal Operation
The powertrain malfunction (wrench) telltale can be turned on by 1 of 2 modules. The PCM provides the electronic throttle control (ETC) status and the transmission status, and the 4X4 control module (if equipped) provides a status of the all wheel drive (AWD) system to the instrument cluster (IC). Each module monitors the powertrain for their respective function(s) and provides the instrument cluster (IC) with the operating status over the high speed controller area network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in any of the monitored systems, the PCM or 4X4 control module (if equipped) provides the instrument cluster (IC) with a message to turn on the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
If the ETC or transmission status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the instrument cluster (IC) for more than 5 seconds, the instrument cluster (IC) sets DTC U0100 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on. If equipped with AWD and the 4WD status message is missing or invalid for more than 5 seconds, the instrument cluster (IC) sets DTC U0102 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.
NOTE: If U0100 is set in the instrument cluster (IC) other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- ETC concern
- Transmission concern
- AWD concern (if equipped)
- 4X4 control module (if equipped)
- PCM
- Instrument cluster (IC)
