Instrument Cluster

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC)

The instrument cluster (IC) contains gauges, informational indicators, warning indicators and reconfigurable telltale indicators that are designed to provide the driver with system status and to alert the driver that certain conditions exist in the vehicle.

The instrument cluster (IC) uses a 2-line vacuum fluorescent display for display of basic informational items such as the odometer and trip odometer and for the message center display information.

All indicator lamps and warning indicator lamps are light-emitting diodes (LED), which are not replaceable.

Gauges
Gauges provide information to the driver indicating the status of systems. The systems that use gauges are as follows:
- Charging system
- Engine coolant temperature
- Engine oil pressure
- Engine rpm
- Fuel level
- Vehicle speed

Informational Indicators
Informational indicators provide information to the driver of conditions that exist in the vehicle. The indicators include:
- Turn signal
- High beam
- Speed control
- Transmission overdrive (O/D) off
- Anti-theft

Warning Indicators
Warning indicators provide information to the driver of conditions that could potentially cause personal injury or alter vehicle performance. The systems that use warning indicators include:
- ABS
- Brake system (indicating low brake fluid, parking brake applied or other ABS brake system concerns)
- Safety belt buckle status
- Supplemental restraints system (SRS)
- Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS)
- Powertrain

Reconfigurable Telltale Indicators
Reconfigurable telltale indicators illuminate in the message center and replace the typical indicator and warning lamps and use the same iconic representation that were previously viewed as indicators or warning indicators in the instrument cluster (IC). The systems that use reconfigurable telltale indicators include:
- Powertrain malfunction
- Transmission (wrench)
- Electronic throttle control (wrench)
- 4X4 (wrench)

- Charging (battery)
- Engine oil pressure
- Engine over-temperature (failsafe)
- Low fuel
- Check fuel cap
- Low windshield washer fluid
- Traction control
- Four wheel drive (4WD)
- 4X4 LOW
- 4X4
- 4X4 AUTO

- Door ajar

Hardwired Inputs
The hardwired inputs are provided from the following systems or components:
- Ambient temperature sensor (if equipped)
- Engine oil pressure switch
- Fuel level
- Low washer fluid switch
- Message center switch

Messaged Inputs
Module messaging has increased dramatically over time and is slowly becoming the standard for sending and receiving information required to operate the instrument cluster (IC). For additional information and a complete list of module messages with the message origination sources, refer to Information Bus (Module Communications Network).

The status and information messages that the instrument cluster (IC) requires from other vehicle systems are as follows:
- Vehicle speed
- Engine temperature
- Engine rpm
- ABS
- 4WD
- Transmission range
- O/D status
- TPMS
- SRS
- Brake fluid level
- Parking brake status
- Engine emission system
- Electronic throttle control (ETC)
