Mirrors: Description and Operation

REAR VIEW MIRRORS

The exterior rear view mirrors are available with either paddle exterior mirrors, aero exterior mirrors or trailer tow exterior mirrors.

Paddle Exterior Rear View Mirrors
The main components of the paddle exterior rear view mirrors are:
- Exterior mirror glass
- Exterior mirror plastic housing

Aero Exterior Rear View Mirrors
The main components of the aero exterior rear view mirrors are:
- Exterior mirror glass
- Exterior mirror plastic housing
- Exterior mirror control switch
- Heated exterior mirror glass (optional)
- LH auto-dimming exterior mirror glass (optional)
- Exterior mirror glass adjustment motors
- Exterior mirror cover (optional chrome or painted)
- Memory exterior mirrors (optional)
- Exterior mirror head power folding motor (optional and not replaceable)
- Exterior mirror puddle lamps (optional)
- Exterior mirror turn signals (optional)

Trailer Tow Exterior Rear View Mirrors
The main components of the trailer tow exterior rear view mirrors are:
- Exterior mirror glass
- Exterior mirror spotter glass
- Exterior mirror plastic housing
- Exterior mirror control switch (optional)
- Heated exterior mirror glass (optional)
- Exterior mirror glass adjustment motors (optional)
- Exterior mirror cover (optional - chrome or painted)
- Exterior mirror puddle lamps (optional)
- Exterior mirror turn signals (optional)

For diagnostics and additional information on the exterior mirror puddle lamps and exterior mirror turn signals, refer to Lighting and Horns.

Power Exterior Mirrors
Power mirrors allow the driver or passenger mirror glass to be positioned electronically. The position of the power mirror glass is controlled by the exterior rear view mirror control switch, which is located on the LH front door trim panel. Adjusting the exterior rear view mirror control switch to the LH or RH position determines which power mirror glass will be controlled.

Heated Exterior Rear View Mirrors
The power exterior rear view mirrors are available with a heated mirror glass option, which heats the mirror glass to remove frost, snow, ice and condensation. On vehicles equipped with optional rear widow defrost, the rear window defrost switch controls the operation of the heated exterior mirrors. The heated exterior mirrors will only operate when the rear window defrost system is ON.

On vehicles equipped with heated exterior mirrors only, the heated exterior mirror switch controls the operation of the heated exterior mirrors. The heated exterior rear view mirror switch is located on the HVAC module. The heated exterior rear view mirrors are heated for a period of 10 minutes when the engine is running and the heated exterior rear view mirror switch is ON.

Power Folding Mirrors
The power folding mirror option allows both power exterior rear view mirrors to be folded or unfolded. Power folding mirrors can be identified by the words FOLD/UNFOLD on the exterior rear view mirror control switch and the words POWER FOLD in the upper outboard corners of the exterior mirror glass. When the exterior rear view mirror control switch is set to the center position and pressed rearward to the FOLD/UNFOLD position, the mirrors will fold in towards the door if they are folded out, or unfold outwards if they are folded in. The RH and LH power folding mirrors will fold and unfold at the same time and cannot be controlled independently. If the power folding mirrors are folded or unfolded continuously for 6 to 10 cycles, the power lockout feature will disable the system for approximately 2 minutes to prevent damage to the power fold motors. After 2 minutes have elapsed, normal operation will resume.

The power folding mirrors must be synchronized any time the mirrors are folded or unfolded without using the mirror control switch, or if a new power folding mirror has been installed. Refer to Exterior Mirror Motor Synchronization - Power Folding. Programming and Relearning

Memory Exterior Mirrors
The memory exterior mirror function recalls the preferred positioning of the LH and RH exterior mirror glass that is retained in the driver seat module (DSM) memory. The memory exterior mirror function is activated by the door mounted switches or the remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter. When a memory position is recalled by the operator, the LH and RH exterior mirror glass will automatically adjust to the preferred position. The DSM is capable of setting a DTC for the memory mirror system when a system concern exists.

For information on the DSM and memory position programming, refer to Seats.

LH Auto-Dimming Exterior Mirror
The LH auto-dimming exterior mirror option automatically adjusts the reflectance level of the LH exterior mirror glass to eliminate unwanted glare. The LH auto-dimming exterior mirror glass reflectance level is variable and is controlled by the interior auto-dimming rear view mirror. When the vehicle is in REVERSE, the interior auto-dimming rear view mirror will automatically adjust the LH auto-dimming exterior mirror glass to a high reflectance level.

Interior Rear View Mirrors
The interior rear view mirrors can be equipped with the following:
- Interior rear view mirror
- Interior auto-dimming rear view mirror (optional)
- Interior rear view mirror with video display (optional)

Interior Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror
The interior auto-dimming rear view mirror automatically reduces the glare caused by headlamps reflecting in the interior rear view mirror. There are 2 photoelectric sensors: one in the front of the interior rear view mirror and one mounted on the glass side of the mirror. The interior auto-dimming rear view mirror adjusts the reflectance level of the interior rear view mirror glass to eliminate unwanted glare. The reflectance level of the mirror glass is variable and depends on the amount of rear glare in relation to ambient light conditions in front of the interior mirror. If the sensors are blocked, the interior auto-dimming feature might not work correctly. To provide increased visibility when backing up, the interior rear view mirror will automatically return to a high reflectance mode whenever the vehicle is in REVERSE.

Interior Rear View Mirror With Video Display
For vehicles that are equipped with a rear mounted object detection camera, a video image will be displayed on the LH side of the interior rear view mirror glass when the transmission is in the REVERSE position. For information on the rear mounted object detection system, refer to Collision Avoidance and Parking Assist Systems.
