Instrument Cluster

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC)

The instrument cluster (IC) is available either with a full function message center (identified by the 3 button message center switch) or with a base message center (identified by the single stem reset button in the instrument cluster [IC]). The instrument cluster (IC) contains gauges, informational indicators, warning indicators and reconfigurable telltale indicators that are designed to provide the driver with system status and to alert the driver that certain conditions exist in the vehicle.

The instrument cluster (IC) uses a 2-line vacuum fluorescent display for display of basic informational items such as the odometer and trip odometer and for the message center display information. All indicator lamps and warning indicator lamps are LEDs, which are not replaceable.

Gauges
Gauges provide information to the driver indicating the status of systems. The systems that use gauges are as follows:
- Charging system
- Engine coolant temperature
- Engine oil pressure
- Engine rpm
- Fuel level
- Transmission temperature (automatic transmissions only)
- Turbo boost (diesel only)
- Vehicle speed

Informational Indicators
Informational indicators provide information to the driver of conditions that exist in the vehicle. The systems that use informational indicators include:
- Anti-theft
- Four wheel drive (4WD)
- 4WD low
- High beam
- Powertrain
- Speed control
- Turn signal
- Tow haul
- Wait to start (diesel only)

Warning Indicators
Warning indicators provide information to the driver of conditions that could potentially cause personal injury or alter vehicle performance. The systems that use warning indicators include:
- ABS
- Brake system (indicating low brake fluid, parking brake applied or other ABS brake system concerns)
- Charging system
- Engine oil pressure (low)
- Safety belt buckle status (driver side only)
- Supplemental restraints system (SRS)
- Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

Reconfigurable Telltale Indicators
Reconfigurable telltale indicators illuminate in the message center and replace the typical indicator and warning lamps and use the same iconic representation that were previously viewed as indicators or warning indicators in the instrument cluster (IC). When multiple warnings exist, the reconfigurable telltale indicators rotate through each display until the condition has been corrected. The systems that use reconfigurable telltale indicators include:
- Powertrain malfunction (wrench)
- Check fuel cap
- Door ajar
- Engine oil pressure (diesel only)
- Engine over-temperature (fail-safe)
- Low fuel
- Traction control
- Water in fuel (diesel only)

Hardwired Inputs
The hardwired inputs are provided from the following systems or components:
- Air filter minder status
- Compass
- Engine oil pressure switch
- 4WD
- Fuel level
- Message center switch
- Park detect
- Passive anti-theft system (PATS)

Messaged Inputs
Module messaging has increased over time and is slowly becoming the standard for sending and receiving information required to operate the instrument cluster (IC). For a complete list of module messages with the message origination sources, refer to Information Bus (Module Communications Network).

Listed below is a partial list of status and information messages that the instrument cluster (IC) requires from other vehicle inputs:
- ABS
- Traction control

- Base brake system
- Brake fluid level status
- Parking brake status

- Lighting system
- LH/RH turn
- High beam
- Door ajar

- Powertrain
- Engine emission system
- Engine rpm
- Engine temperature
- O/D status
- Transmission range
- Vehicle speed

- SRS
- TPMS
- Delayed accessory
