IMPROVED HILL HOLD-BUILT ON OR BEFORE
4/18/2008

FORD:
2008 Focus

ISSUE
Some 2008 Focus vehicles built on or before 4/18/2008 may exhibit a delayed 3-4 upshift or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0128 where normal diagnostics does not isolate a root cause and the DTC was set during ambient temperatures of 20 degrees F (-6 degrees C) or lower. This calibration also contains improvements to the vehicles hill hold capabilities and evaporative systems monitor test results reporting.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 53.14 and higher or 54.2 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2008.3 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website. The calibration change improves the following:

^ Delayed 3-4 upshift.

^ Improved hill hold.

^ Inaccurate mode 6 data of evaporative system monitor test results as reported to the service tool.

^ Thermostat monitor DTC P0128 during ambient temperatures of 20 degrees F (-6 degrees C) or lower.

NOTE
REDUCING HEATER BLOWER FAN SPEED, DURING EXTENDED IDLING, FROM THE HIGHEST SPEED SETTING CAN IMPROVE VEHICLE CABIN WARM UP TIMES IN EXTREMELY COLD AMBIENT TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS.
