SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
PER THE WARRANTY AND POLICY MANUAL PAINT DAMAGE CAUSED BY CONDITIONS SUCH AS CHIPS, SCRATCHES, DENTS, DINGS, ROAD SALT, STONE CHIPS OR OTHER ACTS OF NATURE ARE NOT COVERED UNDER THE NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY. HOWEVER, PAINT ABRASION AT THE DOG LEG AREA DUE TO THE ABOVE CIRCUMSTANCES IS A UNIQUE CONDITION ON THE FOCUS AND, AS A RESULT, REPAIRS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR BASIC WARRANTY COVERAGE.
NOTE
PAINT STRIPPING IS NOT REQUIRED FOR THIS REPAIR.
NOTE
PRIOR TO INSTALLING URETHANE PATCHES,
PAINT VEHICLE BODY TO MATCH EXTERIOR VEHICLE BODY COLOR (BASE COLOR COAT/CLEAR COAT IN THE EFFECTED AREA'S ONLY (ROCKER PANEL, 1/4 PANEL, DOG LEG AND/OR REAR DOOR, DEPENDENT ON MODEL).
NOTE
ALL SURFACES MUST BE CLEANED PRIOR TO FILM APPLICATION. USE A CLEANER THAT WILL NOT LEAVE A RESIDUE. TO AVOID FILM BUBBLING DUE TO PAINT OUTGASSING ON REPAINTED VEHICLES, PAINT MUST BE THOROUGHLY DRY AND COMPLETELY CURED BEFORE ANY ATTEMPT IS MADE TO APPLY FILM TO VEHICLE. CHECK PAINT MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS FOR RECOMMENDED CURE TIME AND METHOD. CLEAN THE VEHICLE'S SURFACE WITH 3M(TM) ADHESIVE CLEANERS PART 08984 OR 08987 OR EQUIVALENT PRIOR TO PERFORMING THE PROCEDURE.
NOTE
WET APPLICATION IS REQUIRED FOR A CLEAR APPEARANCE.
1. Obtain the proper Urethane Patch Kit, for the specific vehicle model being worked on.
2. Lay out the protection kit for the left and right sides on a clean flat sur[ace.
NOTE
SOAP SOLUTION MIX RECOMMENDATION IS: TWO DROPS OF JOHNSON'S(TM) BABY SHAMPOO (OBTAIN LOCALLY) TO 16 OUNCES OF WATER.
3. Taking the appropriate contents for one side of the vehicle, spray a generous amount of soapy water onto the area of the vehicle that the adhesive will be applied to, the adhesive side of the film patches and your fingers.
4. Place patch 1 into position. (Figure 1 for 2 door model) (Figure 2 for 4 door model)
CAUTION
SOME STATE VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUND (VOC) REGULATIONS MAY PROHIBIT THE USE OF THIS ALCOHOL/WATER SOLUTION. FOR EXAMPLE, THE CALIFORNIA SOUTH COAST AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT DISTRICT PROHIBITS USE OF THIS SOLUTION WITHOUT A PERMIT OR A REGULATORY EXEMPTION. YOU SHOULD CHECK WITH YOUR STATE ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORITIES TO DETERMINE WHETHER USE OF THIS SOLUTION IS RESTRICTED OR PROHIBITED.
NOTE
ALCOHOL AND WATER SOLUTION MIX RECOMMENDATION IS: 25% ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL (OBTAIN LOCALLY) AND 75% WATER.
NOTE
SPRAYING THE PATCHES WITH THIS SOLUTION WILL HELP WASH THE SOAP AND WATER SOLUTION AWAY AND WILL ALLOW THE SQUEEGEE TO SLIDE EASILY. KEEPING THE ADHESIVE WET DURING APPLICATION WILL AID IN POSITIONING PATCHES.
5. Using a second solution of isopropyl alcohol and water, lift up a portion of the film to the half-way point and spray both sides of the film and the vehicle with the alcohol and water solution.
6. Secure the patch into the desired position by using the alcohol and water solution and a squeegee at the far end of the application. Some stretching may be required.
7. Spray the patch again with the alcohol and water solution.
8. Using the squeegee, work from the center and slide the squeegee towards the edges of the patch. This motion pushes out any remaining soap and water solution as well as any air bubbles that may have formed.
NOTE
USE OF CLOTHS OTHER THAN SPECIFIED MAY SCRATCH THE PAINTED SURFACES OR PATCHES.
9. Wipe the patch off with a 3MTM Perfect Ill Detailing cloth (3MTM Part 39016) or equivalent (obtained locally) to get a clear look at the application.
10. Visually inspect for water pockets or air bubbles. If found, re-wet the surface and your fingers with the alcohol and water solution and re-squeegee.
11. Repeat this procedure on the second half of the patch.
12. Refer to (Figure 2 for 4-door models) and repeat steps 3-11 for patches 2, 3 and 4 or (Figure 1 for 2-door models) and repeat steps 3-11 for patches 2 and 3.
13. For the opposite side of the vehicle, repeat steps 3-12.
