Removal
All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to Battery.
3. Remove the 3 battery tray nuts. Pull the battery tray up, disconnect the wiring harness fasteners from the battery tray and remove the battery tray.
4. NOTE: Partial zero emissions vehicle (PZEV) shown, non-PZEV similar.
Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
5. NOTE: Non-PZEV shown, PZEV similar.
Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose and disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
Partial zero emissions vehicle (PZEV)
6. Loosen the air cleaner inlet hose clamp.
Non-PZEV
7. Remove the 2 bolts.
All vehicles
8. Loosen the clamp, pull the air cleaner assembly straight up and remove the air cleaner assembly.
9. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
1 Transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
2 Transaxle solenoid electrical connector.
10. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.
11. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube bolt.
12. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever.
13. Squeeze the tabs together and remove the selector lever cable from the bracket.
14. Remove the selector lever cable from the selector lever cable clip and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.
15. Disconnect the throttle control electrical connector.
16. Disconnect the bottom PCM electrical connector.
17. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
18. Remove the power steering hose retainers and the wiring harness retainer from the fluid filler tube.
19. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube bolt, rotate the transmission fluid filler tube from under the throttle body and remove the transmission fluid filler tube.
20. Remove the front wheels.
21. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.
Remove the halfshaft nuts.
22. NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Remove the front brake hose clips and remove the brake hoses from the struts.
23. NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Remove the bolts and disconnect both of the lower control arms from the knuckles.
24. NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Using the special tool, remove the front halfshaft from the steering knuckle.
25. Remove the intermediate shaft bearing cap locknuts, then remove the bearing cap from the RH intermediate shaft bearing.
26. Remove the RH intermediate shaft.
^ Allow the transmission fluid to drain into a suitable container.
27. CAUTION: Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees. Damage to the halfshaft will occur.
Using the special tools, remove the LH halfshaft from the transaxle.
^ Allow the transmission fluid to drain into a suitable container.
28. Remove the starter nuts, then disconnect the wiring from the starter.
29. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer from the starter motor stud bolt.
30. Remove the nut and remove bracket from the starter stud.
31. Remove the 2 starter bolts and remove the starter.
32. Remove the starter isolator.
33. CAUTION: Only rotate the engine in a clockwise direction or engine damage will occur.
NOTE: Mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.
Rotate the crankshaft to gain access to the torque converter nuts, then remove the 4 nuts.
34. Remove the roll restrictor bolts, rotate the bottom of the engine away from the subframe and remove the roll restrictor.
35. Disconnect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.
36. Remove the nut from the electrical connector bracket.
37. Remove the nut and position the electrical connector bracket aside.
38. Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts.
39. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube secondary latches.
40. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transaxle.
1 Squeeze the tabs together and slide the transmission fluid cooler tube lock out of the transmission fluid cooler tube.
2 Remove the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transaxle.
41. Install the special tools and support the engine.
42. Remove the nuts and remove the transaxle support insulator.
43. Using the special tool, lower the transaxle assembly so that the transaxle support insulator bracket clears the unibody.
44. Secure the transaxle with a high-lift jack using a safety strap.
45. NOTE: Note the location of the different length bolts for installation.
Remove the 3 transaxle-to-engine bolts.
46. Remove the 5 transaxle-to-engine bolts.
47. Separate the transaxle from the engine and lower the transaxle.
48. Install the special tool to prevent damage to the torque converter.
49. If replacement of the transaxle is required, remove the differential opening cover.
50. Remove the transaxle support insulator bracket nuts and remove the bracket.
51. Remove the 2 bolts and the selector lever cable bracket.
