Transmission - Diesel Engines





Removal

All vehicles

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

2. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.

3. Disconnect the battery.

Vehicles equipped with a one-piece driveshaft

4. Remove the driveshaft.

Vehicles equipped with a two-piece driveshaft

5. Index mark the driveshaft flange and the driveshaft. Remove the 4 bolts.

6. Position aside the driveshaft and support with mechanic's wire.

All vehicles

7. If transmission disassembly is required, drain the transmission fluid. Remove the transmission fluid drain plug and allow the transmission fluid to drain.





8. Install the transmission fluid drain plug.
- Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).





9. Install a suitable high-lift transmission jack.

10. If equipped, remove the 2 wire harness retainers from the crossmember and position the wire harness aside.





11. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube inlet fitting.





12. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube outlet fitting.





13. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the bracket.





14. If equipped, remove the selector lever cable from the routing clip.





15. Remove the selector lever cable and selector lever cable bracket from the transmission.

1. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever.

2. Disconnect the wire harness from the selector lever cable bracket.

3. Remove the bolts and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.





16. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the transmission vehicle harness connector.





17. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.





18. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) and intermediate shaft speed sensor electrical connector.





19. Disconnect and position the wire harness aside.





20. Disconnect the wire harness from the bracket.





21. Remove the cylinder block opening cover in order to gain access to the torque converter nuts.





22. If equipped with dual generators, rotate the tensioner and remove the outer accessory drive belt from the crankshaft pulley.





23. Use the Strap Wrench to rotate the crankshaft in order to gain access to the torque converter to flexplate nuts.





24. Remove and discard the 6 torque converter to flexplate nuts.





25. Remove the LH crossmember nuts.





26. Remove the LH crossmember bracket.





27. Remove the RH crossmember nuts.





28. Remove the RH crossmember bracket.





29. Remove the transmission insulator and retainer nuts and remove the crossmember.





30. Remove the bolts and the transmission insulator and retainer from the extension housing.





31. Remove the 9 transmission-to-engine mounting bolts and position the bracket aside.





32. Slide the transmission back and install the Torque Converter Retainer.





33. Remove and discard the transmission fluid filler tube O-ring.
