Pinpoint Test D: The Speedometer Is Inoperative
Normal Operation
The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) signal from the PCM for all vehicles except Hybrid and from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) for the Hybrid over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The IC monitors the VSS input from the PCM or TCM and commands the speedometer with a corresponding movement of the pointer.
If the IC receives invalid vehicle speed data from the PCM/TCM for 5 seconds or less, the IC defaults the speedometer to the last setting, based upon the last known good vehicle speed message. If the IC does not receive the vehicle speed data from the PCM/TCM or if the data received is deemed invalid, the IC sets DTC U0100 (except Hybrid) or U0101 (Hybrid) in continuous memory and defaults the speedometer to 0 km/h (0 mph).
NOTE: If DTC U0100 is set in the IC, other observable symptoms may be an inoperative tachometer, temperature gauge (except Hybrid) or odometer.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- PCM concern (except Hybrid)
- TCM concern (Hybrid only)
- IC
PINPOINT TEST D: THE SPEEDOMETER IS INOPERATIVE
-------------------------------------------------
D1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO AND TCM SELF-TESTS
- Check for recorded DTCs from the PCM Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and TCM self-tests.
- Are any PCM or TCM DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
GO to D2.
-------------------------------------------------
D2 CARRY OUT THE SPEEDOMETER ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC speedometer (SPDOMETER) active command. Command the speedometer on and off while monitoring the speedometer.
- Does the speed begin at 0 km/h (0 mph) move to 193 km/h (120 mph) and return to 0 km/h (0 mph)?
Yes
GO to D3.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
D3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Is DTC U0100 or U0101 recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100, Go To Pinpoint Test AS. Pinpoint Tests AS: DTC U0100
For DTC U0101, Go To Pinpoint Test AT. Pinpoint Tests AT: DTC U0101
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
