Pinpoint Test R: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator is Never/Always On (Base IC)
Normal Operation
The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the powertrain status from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). When a system concern is detected, the PCM sends the IC a command signal to illuminate the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator. If the 4X4 control module detects a failure with the Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) system, the 4X4 control module sends a message to the IC over the HS-CAN to illuminate the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator. On 4.6L engines, if the Transmission Control Module (TCM), detects a failure with the transmission, the TCM sends a message to the IC over the HS-CAN to illuminate the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- 4WD system concern
- IC
PINPOINT TEST R: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON (BASE IC)
-------------------------------------------------
R1 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC all lamps active command (ALL_LAMP). Command all the lamps on and off while monitoring the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator.
- Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator turn on when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to R2.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
R2 VERIFY THE 4WD OPERATION
- Verify that the vehicle is in 2-wheel drive when the 4x4 high is switched off, and that the 4WD high operates when switched to the 4x4.
- Does the 4x4 high operate correctly?
Yes
GO to R3.
No
Refer to Transfer Case. Testing and Inspection
-------------------------------------------------
R3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST
- Retrieve the recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any PCM DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
GO to R4.
-------------------------------------------------
R4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE TCM SELF-TEST
- Retrieve the recorded TCM DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any TCM DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Transmission Control Systems. Testing and Inspection
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
