NOTE: The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
Hood Latch
The hood latch system contains a latch fastened to the body and a hood latch striker attached to the hood. The latch is controlled by a primary and a secondary hood latch release handle and cables.
Front Door
The front door entry system contains a latch that is fastened to the inside of the door frame and is controlled by the exterior and interior door handles. The latch contains a door ajar switch and a door lock actuator. The front doors can be locked/unlocked by the manual lock rod, the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter, the keyless entry keypad, the door lock control switch or the door lock cylinder.
Rear Door
The SuperCab rear door handle fastens on the exterior of the door frame. The handle is a single-action design with 2 cable-actuated latches. The top latch is fastened to the exterior of the door frame and the bottom latch is fastened to the inside of the door frame. The bottom latch contains a serviceable door ajar switch.
The SuperCrew rear door entry system contains a latch that is fastened to the inside of the door frame and controlled by the exterior and interior door handles. The latch contains a door ajar switch and a door lock actuator. The rear doors can be locked/unlocked by the manual lock rod, the RKE transmitter, the keyless entry keypad, or the door lock control switch. The rear doors are equipped with a child safety lock feature.
Tailgate
The tailgate release handle is integrated with a lock cylinder. The 2 latches are actuated by 2 actuating rods that are controlled by the release handle and remote control.
Spare Tire
To prevent theft of the spare tire, the vehicle is equipped with a spare tire lock cylinder.
Power Locks
The power lock/unlock feature requests all of the vehicle doors locked or unlocked upon a customer request from either door lock control switch in the vehicle. The power door locking system functions independently of ignition status or vehicle speed.
Autolock
The autolock feature locks all the doors when all the doors are closed, the key is in the RUN position, the transmission is in either a forward or reverse gear, and the vehicle speed is greater than 20 km/h (12 mph).
The autolock feature repeats when any door is opened then closed while the ignition is still in the RUN position, the vehicle speed is 15 km/h (9 mph) or slower, and the vehicle then attains a speed greater than 20 km/h (12 mph).
Refer to Autolock and Auto-Unlock Programming Autolock and Auto-Unlock Programming for programming information.
Auto-Unlock
NOTE: The doors will not auto-unlock if the vehicle has been electronically locked before the driver door is opened.
The auto-unlock feature unlocks all the doors when the ignition is in the RUN position, all the doors are closed, and the vehicle has been in motion at a speed greater than 20 km/h (12 mph), the vehicle then comes to a stop and the ignition is switched to LOCK or ACC, and the driver door is opened within 10 minutes of the ignition being switched to LOCK or ACC.
Refer to Autolock and Auto-Unlock Programming Autolock and Auto-Unlock Programming for programming information.
Smart Unlock
The smart unlock feature prevents the doors from locking with the key in the ignition lock cylinder. When the SJB receives a lock command from a door lock control switch only, and the key is in the ignition lock cylinder with one of the front doors open, the SJB commands the doors to unlock.
The vehicle can still be locked with the ignition key in the ignition cylinder by locking the doors with the push button rods, the door lock cylinder, the keyless entry keypad, or a lock command from a Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter.
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE)
The SJB accepts programming of up to 4 RKE transmitters. The RKE transmitters can be programmed using a scan tool or by using the Remote Keyless Entry Transmitter Programming procedure. Refer to Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter Programming Transmitter for programming information.
The RKE transmitter carries out the following functions:
- Unlocks the driver door
- Unlocks all doors
- Locks all doors
- Activates/deactivates the panic alarm
- Commands the interior lamps on (when unlocking) and off (when locking)
- Flashes the turn signals once when LOCK is pressed once and all the doors are closed
- If any door is ajar, the turn signals will not flash when LOCK is pressed until all doors are closed
- Sounds the horn once and flashes the turn signals twice when LOCK is pressed twice within 3 seconds and the doors are closed
- Sounds the horn twice if the LOCK is pressed twice within 3 seconds if any door is ajar
The RKE transmitter has a normal operating range of 10 m (33 ft).
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Lock/Unlock Control - Unlock
The RKE feature provides lock/unlock functions independently of key position, vehicle speed, or transmission position. The RKE feature provides a stepped (if enabled) process for unlocking the doors. Upon receipt of the first request for unlocking the doors, the RKE feature requests the SJB to unlock the driver door only. If another unlock request is received within 3 seconds of the first, the RKE feature requests the SJB to unlock all the doors. This feature can be configured to global unlock, so that all the doors unlock on the first press of the UNLOCK button. Refer to Stepped Unlock Programming Stepped Unlock Programming for programming information.
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Lock/Unlock Control - Lock
The RKE feature requests that all the doors be locked when the LOCK button is pressed. On any press of the LOCK button with all doors closed, the SJB provides one flash of the turn signals. If any door is ajar, no flash occurs. As soon as the last door is closed, the SJB provides the flash of the turn signals. If 2 presses of the LOCK button are received within 3 seconds, the horn chirps once and the turn signals flash twice to indicate that all the doors are closed and locked. If any door is ajar when the second lock request is received within 3 seconds of the first, the RKE transmitter feature requests the SJB to chirp the horn twice without flashing the turn signals to indicate all the doors are locked but one or more doors are ajar. When the key is in the RUN or START position, the turn signal flashes and horn chirp confirmations do not occur.
Panic Alarm
The panic alarm feature provides audible and visual alarms which are evident from the exterior of the vehicle. The panic alarm feature requests that the turn signals are flashed and the horn sounds until deactivation. The flashing of the outputs occurs simultaneously. Activation of the panic alarm is accomplished by pressing the panic button on a RKE transmitter whenever the key is in the OFF position. At all other times this feature is disabled. Deactivation of an active panic alarm is accomplished by any of the following actions:
- A second press of the RKE transmitter panic button
- The key is switched out of the OFF position
- A period of 2 minutes and 45 seconds has elapsed since the initial activation
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter Memory Seat
The RKE transmitter feature provides memory seat/adjustable pedals/mirrors/steering column (if equipped) feature. When the unlock button is pressed, the drivers seat, the adjustable pedals, the mirrors, and the steering column move to the desired memory position (the seat, pedal, mirror, and steering column position corresponds to the transmitter being used). This feature can be enabled/disabled. Refer to Remote Memory Activation Remote Memory Activation and Remote Memory Deactivation Remote Memory Deactivation for programming information.
Keyless Entry Keypad
The keyless entry keypad (if equipped), located in the exterior handle of the driver door, provides a method for the customer to access the vehicle without a key or RKE transmitter. The keyless entry keypad feature:
- Locks all doors
- Unlocks the driver door
- Unlocks all doors
- Programs/erases the customer keypad code
- Enables/disables auto-locking
- Enables/disables auto-unlocking
- Illuminates the keypad
- Illuminates the interior lamps
The keyless entry keypad feature operates independently of key position status, vehicle speed, or transmission position. When a keyless entry keypad button is pressed, the keyless entry keypad buttons illuminate to provide better visibility. If LOCK ALL DOORS is entered or 5 seconds have elapsed since the last button press, the illumination is turned off.
Vehicles equipped with a keyless entry keypad are programmed with a factory set 5-digit entry code. This code is provided to the customer on a wallet card in the Owner Literature package. In addition, this code is available through the use of a scan tool, and is printed on the SJB label located on the back side of the module (installed position). When entering codes, each digit must be entered within 5 seconds of the previous button press.
Unlocking the Doors with the Keyless Entry Keypad System
To unlock the driver door (with stepped unlock enabled), enter either the factory set code or the personal code (each digit must be pressed within 5 seconds of the prior digit). This also illuminates the interior lamps.
To unlock all doors with stepped unlock enabled, enter either the factory set code or the personal code (driver door unlocks) and press the 3/4 button within 5 seconds.
To unlock all doors with stepped unlock disabled, enter either the factory set code or the personal code. This also illuminates the interior lamps. Refer to Stepped Unlock Programming Stepped Unlock Programming for information on how to program the stepped unlocking.
Locking the Doors with the Keyless Entry Keypad System
It is not necessary to enter the factory set or personal code prior to locking all the doors. To lock all the doors, press the 7/8 and 9/0 buttons at the same time with the driver door closed.
Anti-Scan Feature
To provide added security, the keyless entry keypad is disabled for 1 minute after pressing the button 35 times without a valid entry code being entered. The keypad flashes during this 1-minute mode with all functionality disabled except for buttons 7/8 and 9/0 still being allowed to lock the vehicle.
Anti-scan is turned off after any of the following events:
- One minute of keyless entry keypad inactivity has elapsed
- The RKE transmitter UNLOCK button is pressed
- The key is turned to the RUN position
Perimeter Lighting Feature
NOTE: On vehicles with autolamps, the perimeter lighting feature does not activate in daylight conditions.
Vehicles equipped with perimeter lighting can have this feature activated or deactivated. Refer to Perimeter Lighting Feature Programming Perimeter Lighting Feature Programming for programming information.
The following items illuminate when the unlock button on an RKE transmitter is pressed:
