Transmission - Four Wheel Drive (4WD)
Removal
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. NOTE: If transmission disassembly is required, drain the transmission fluid.
Loosen the transmission fluid pan bolts and allow the transmission fluid to drain.
4. After the transmission fluid has drained, remove the transmission fluid pan and drain the remaining transmission fluid from the transmission fluid pan.
5. NOTE: It is not necessary to tighten the transmission fluid pan bolts in this step.
Install the transmission fluid pan.
6. Remove the transfer case.
7. NOTE: Make sure that the transmission is securely fastened to the transmission jack.
Position a suitable high-lift transmission jack under the transmission and remove the jackstand.
8. NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Detach the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) clips from retainers and disconnect the RH and LH HO2S and the RH and LH Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) connectors. Disconnect the wiring harness from the top of the transmission.
9. NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Remove the RH and LH exhaust flange nuts from the exhaust manifold.
10. Remove the 2 dual converter Y-pipe bolts and the dual converter Y-pipe.
11. Remove the fuel line bracket bolt and position the bracket and lines aside.
12. NOTICE: To prevent selector lever cable damage, do not apply force to the selector lever cable between the manual control lever and the selector lever cable bracket.
Remove the selector lever cable end from the manual control lever.
13. Remove the 2 bolts from the selector lever cable bracket and position it aside.
14. Remove the transmission inspection cover.
1. Remove the 2 bolts.
2. Remove the inspection cover.
3. Remove the bolt for the separator plate.
15. Remove the rubber access plug.
16. Remove and discard the 4 flexplate-to-torque converter nuts.
17. Remove the starter motor.
18. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube nut from the transmission case stud bolt.
19. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transmission and position them aside.
20. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator from the transmission filler tube and set aside. Remove the bolt from the RH cylinder head for the transmission filler tube and position the filler tube aside.
21. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the wire harness from the transmission.
1. Disconnect the Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector.
2. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor connector.
3. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor connector.
22. Disconnect the transmission vehicle harness connector, remove the harness clip from the top of the transmission and position the harness aside.
23. NOTE: Note the length and the location of the bolts during removal.
NOTE: The top left bolt secures the fuel line bracket to the transmission case.
Remove the 7 transmission-to-engine bolts.
24. WARNING: Secure the torque converter in the transmission during removal or installation. The torque converter is heavy and may result in injury if it falls out of the transmission. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
Leaving the transmission in a horizontal position, slide it back far enough to install the Torque Converter Retainer. Install the Torque Converter Retainer.
25. Once the transmission is clear of the vehicle, the transmission fluid cooler and cooler tubes should be cleaned. Carry out transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning. For additional information, refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Backflushing and Cleaning Transmission Fluid Cooler Backflushing and Cleaning.
26. Remove the Torque Converter Retainer.
