Instrument Cluster (IC)

Instrument Cluster (IC)

NOTE: The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).

The Instrument Cluster (IC) is available with a full-function message center (identified by the 3-button message center switch). The IC contains gauges, informational indicators and warning indicators that are designed to provide the driver with system status and to alert the driver that certain conditions exist in the vehicle.

The IC displays basic informational items such as the odometer and trip odometer warning messages in the message center display area.

Gauges

Gauges provide information to the driver indicating the status of systems. The systems that use gauges are as follows:

- Engine coolant temperature
- Engine rpm
- Fuel level
- Vehicle speed

Informational Indicators

Informational indicators provide information to the driver of conditions that exist in the vehicle. The informational indicators are grouped into the following systems/subsystems:

- Engine/powertrain control
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
- Powertrain malfunction (wrench)
- Transmission (grade assist)

- Lighting
- High beam
- Turn signal

- Vehicle control
- Anti-theft
- Speed control
- Traction control

Warning Indicators

Warning indicators provide information to the driver of conditions that could potentially cause personal injury or alter vehicle performance. The warning indicators are grouped into the following systems/subsystems:

- Engine/powertrain control
- Charging system
- Low engine oil pressure

- Occupant/driver safety
- Door ajar
- Safety belt
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
- Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) (air bag)

- Vehicle control
- ABS
- Brake system

Hardwired Inputs

The hardwired inputs required to instrument cluster indication are provided from the following systems or components:

- Engine oil pressure switch
- Fuel level sensor
- Fuel pump module
- Washer fluid level switch
- Message center switch
- Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) transceiver
- Traction control disable switch

Network Messaged Inputs

Module messaging has increased over time and is slowly becoming the standard for sending and receiving information required to operate the IC. For a complete list of module messages with the message origination sources, refer to Information Bus.

The status and information messages that the IC requires from other vehicle inputs are grouped into the following systems/subsystems:

- ABS
- Traction control

- Base brake system
- Brake fluid level status
- Parking brake status

- Lighting system
- LH/RH turn
- High beam

- Powertrain
- Engine emission system
- Engine rpm
- Engine temperature
- Grade assist
- Vehicle speed

- Occupant/driver safety
- SRS
- TPMS
