TSB 09-7-3

04/20/09

NAVIGATION TOUCH SCREEN AND/OR ELECTRONIC
FINISH PANEL (EFP) BUTTONS ARE NON
RESPONSIVE

FORD:
2009 Flex

ISSUE
Some 2009 Flex vehicles equipped with navigation and built before 1/20/2009 may find the touch screen buttons and/or the electronic finish panel EFP buttons for the navigation system are intermittently not responding. The freeze symptom seems to occur in cold conditions and may or may not go away after the vehicle/weather warms up.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
This may be caused by the felt insulator located behind the trim ring pressing on the outer edge of the touch screen. To verify, depress the manual map button to determine if the cursor is scrolling or if there is no response from touch screen, proceed to the service procedure in this message. To correct this condition, follow the procedure steps below.

1. Remove the trim ring around the navigation screen per Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-12.

2. Once the trim ring is removed, verify the touch screen functionality is restored.

a. If no change, this procedure does not apply and continue with WSM diagnostics.

b. If touch screen functionality is restored with the trim ring removed, proceed to Step 3.

3. Trim the felt pad on the backside of the trim ring so that it does not contact the screen.

4. Clean the navigation bracket below the first screw hole for both right and left hand sides of the display. (Figure 1)

NOTE
CLEAN THE SURFACE BY WIPING WITH A 50% SOLUTION OF ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL AND WATER.

5. Use Mylar tape and place two (2) pieces side by side and double layered, the patch should be 13/16" by 13/16" (20 mm x 20 mm) and thicker than 1/32" but less than 1/16" (1.3 mm), onto the navigation bracket below the first screw hole for both right and left hand sides of the display. (Figure 1)

NOTE
INSURE THAT THE SURFACE IS DRY PRIOR TO INSTALLING THE MYLAR TAPE.
