Glow Plug Sleeve
Removal
1. Remove the engine from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Engine.
2. Mount the engine on a Car/Truck Engine Stand.
3. NOTICE: Do not pull on the wiring to remove the glow plug connector or damage may occur.
Using the Glow Plug Connector Remover/Installer, remove the glow plug harness.
4. Remove the glow plug(s) as needed.
5. Fill the lower portion of the glow plug sleeve with grease to prevent metal from falling into the cylinder.
6. NOTICE: The glow plug sleeve is made of stainless steel. The glow plug sleeve removal tap must be lubricated with oil. Otherwise, excessive force will be needed to start the tap, which may result in damage to the tap.
Thread the Glow Plug Sleeve Remover tap into the glow plug sleeve.
7. Install the Glow Plug Sleeve Remover into the threaded sleeve and tighten. Use a wrench to thread the Glow Plug Sleeve Remover into the sleeve until the sleeve is extracted.
- Discard the glow plug sleeve.
8. NOTE: Cylinder head removed for clarity.
Clean the glow plug bore with a stiff wire brush. Use filtered compressed air to remove foreign material from the glow plug recess.
Installation
1. Verify that the glow plug bore is completely clean and dry.
2. Apply threadlock sealant to the new glow plug sleeve in the 2 places shown.
3. Using the Glow Plug Sleeve Installer, install the glow plug sleeve into the glow plug bore until it bottoms.
4. Clean the glow plug sleeve after installation with a nylon brush and solvent. Make sure threadlock sealant is cleaned out before it hardens.
5. Install the glow plug(s) as needed.
- Tighten to 19 Nm (168 lb-in).
6. Using the Glow Plug Connector Remover/Installer, install the glow plug harness.
7. Remove the engine from the engine stand.
8. Install the engine in the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Engine.
