Pinpoint Test Y: The Traction Control Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The traction control indicator flashes when the vehicle traction control is in active mode or is being controlled by the ABS module. The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the traction control data from the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The IC monitors the traction control message and when the ABS module detects a traction control concern, the IC illuminates the traction control indicator. If the traction control message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0121 in continuous memory and defaults the traction control indicator on.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Traction control system
- ABS module
- IC
PINPOINT TEST Y: THE TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
-------------------------------------------------
Y1 CHECK THE TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR OPERATION USING THE TRACTION CONTROL DISABLE SWITCH
- Press the traction control disable switch to disable the traction control system while monitoring the traction control indicator.
- Does the traction control indicator illuminate?
Yes
If the traction control indicator does not operate while in traction active mode, INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
If the traction control indicator operates in traction active mode, the system is operating normally at this time.
No
GO to Y2.
-------------------------------------------------
Y2 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC traction control indicator (CHECK_TRACT) active command and command the traction control active indicator on and off. Observe the traction control indicator.
- Does the traction control indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to Y3.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
Y3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded ABS module DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any ABS module DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems.
No
GO to Y4.
-------------------------------------------------
Y4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Is DTC U0121 recorded?
Yes
GO to Y5.
No
INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
Y5 CARRY OUT THE IC SELF-TEST
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC Self-Test.
- Clear the DTCs. Repeat the IC self-test.
- Is DTC U0121 present?
Yes
REFER to Information Bus to diagnose no communication with the ABS module.
No
The traction control indicator is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have resulted from an intermittent network concern.
