Pinpoint Test AB: The Low Fuel Indicator Is Never/Always On (Base Cluster Only)

Normal Operation

The low fuel illuminates when the fuel remaining in the fuel tank is approximately one-eighth tank. The Instrument Cluster (IC) uses the same fuel level data used to operate the fuel gauge. When the IC receives the fuel level data, the fuel gauge indicates low fuel and the IC turns on the low fuel indicator.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

PINPOINT TEST AB: THE LOW FUEL INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON (BASE CLUSTER ONLY)

AB1 CHECK THE FUEL GAUGE OPERATION


- Ignition ON.
- Verify that the fuel gauge operates correctly.
- Does the fuel gauge operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AB2.

No
If equipped with a single sender L-shaped fuel tank, GO to Pinpoint Test B. Pinpoint Test B: Incorrect Fuel Gauge Indication - Single Sender L-Shaped Fuel Tank

If equipped with a dual sender saddle-type fuel tank, GO to Pinpoint Test C. Pinpoint Test C: Incorrect Fuel Gauge Indication - Dual Sender Saddle-Type Fuel Tank

AB2 CARRY OUT THE IC WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL


- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC all indicators (ALL_LAMP) active command mode and command all the indicators on and off. Observe the low fuel indicator.
- Does the low fuel indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
The system is operating normally at this time. The fuel level must be below one-eighth tank before the low fuel indicator is turned on.

No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
