Pinpoint Test AC: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The powertrain malfunction (wrench) telltale can be turned on by one of four modules. The PCM provides the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) status (hybrid) and transaxle status (non-hybrid), the Transmission Control Module (TCM) provides the transaxle status (hybrid), the 4X4 control module provides the Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) system status (non-hybrid) and the Battery Control Module (BCM) (hybrid) provides the traction battery system status to the Instrument Cluster (IC). Each module monitors the powertrain for their respective function(s) and provides the IC with the operating status over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in any of the monitored systems, the PCM, TCM, 4X4 control module or BCM provide the IC with a message to turn on the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator.
If the ETC message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IC for more than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0100 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.
NOTE: If DTC U0100 is set in the IC other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.
If the transaxle status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IC for more than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0101 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.
If the traction battery status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IC for more than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0111 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.
If the 4WD system status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IC for more than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0114 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- ETC concern
- Transaxle concern
- Traction battery concern
- 4WD concern
- IC
PINPOINT TEST AC: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
-------------------------------------------------
AC1 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger .
- Select the IC powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator (ETC_IND) active command. Command the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator on and off. Observe the indicator.
- Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to AC2.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
AC2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO AND TCM SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM and TCM (hybrid) DTCs from the PCM Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and TCM self-test.
- Are any PCM or TCM DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information or Automatic Transmission/Transaxle &/or Transmission Control Systems.
No
For hybrid, GO to AC4.
Non-hybrid with 4WD, GO to AC3.
Non-hybrid without 4WD, GO to AC5.
-------------------------------------------------
AC3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE 4X4 CONTROL MODULE SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded 4X4 control module DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any 4X4 control module DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Body Control Systems.
No
GO to AC5.
-------------------------------------------------
AC4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE BCM SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded BCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
- Are any BCM DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Body Control Systems.
No
GO to AC5.
-------------------------------------------------
AC5 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any IC DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100, GO to Pinpoint Test AU. Pinpoint Tests AU: DTC U0100
For DTC U0101, GO to Pinpoint Test AV. Pinpoint Tests AV: DTC U0101
For DTC U0111, GO to Pinpoint Test AW. Pinpoint Tests AW: DTC U0111
For DTC B1318, GO to Pinpoint Test AS to diagnose the charging system first. If DTC U0114 returns, REFER to Information Bus to diagnose no communication with the 4WD control module. Pinpoint Tests AS: DTC B1318
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
