Pinpoint Test L: The Low Fuel Warning Indicator Is Never On

Normal Operation

The low fuel warning indicator illuminates when the Instrument Cluster (IC) calculation for the Distance To Empty (DTE) reaches 120 km (75 miles) (with a MyKey(TM) key) or 80 km (50 miles) (with an administrator key) or less, or approximately one-eighth of the fuel capacity. The DTE is calculated internally by the IC from data received from the PCM and the fuel gauge. When the IC receives the data and determines that the remaining fuel is 120 km (75 miles) (with a MyKey(TM) key) or 80 km (50 miles) (with an administrator key) or less, the fuel gauge indicates low fuel and the IC turns on the low fuel warning indicator. If the IC detects a fault in the fuel input (circuitry or fuel pump module), the IC defaults the fuel gauge to the empty (E) stop position and turns on the low fuel warning indicator.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- IC

PINPOINT TEST L: THE LOW FUEL WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER ON

-------------------------------------------------
L1 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC low fuel (LOFUELL) active command. Command the low fuel warning indicator on and off. Observe the low fuel warning indicator.
- Does the low fuel warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
If equipped with a message center cluster, GO to L2.

If equipped with a base IC (non-message center), GO to L3.

No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
L2 CHECK THE DTE OPERATION

- Ignition ON.
- Access and observe the message center or integrated display Distance To Empty (DTE) displayed mileage.
- Does the DTE display indicate 120 km (75 miles) (with a MyKey(TM) key) or 80 km (50 miles) (with an administrator key) or less until empty?

Yes
GO to L3.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The low fuel warning message does not appear until the DTE is 120 km (75 miles) (with a MyKey(TM) key) or 80 km (50 miles)
(with an administrator key) or less.

-------------------------------------------------
L3 CHECK THE FUEL GAUGE OPERATION

- Observe the fuel gauge operation.
- Does the fuel gauge indicate empty?

Yes
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test B. Pinpoint Test B: Incorrect Fuel Gauge Indication
