Pinpoint Test G: Excessive Noise
Normal Operation
The clutch is designed to transfer the power from the engine to the transmission, which may be either stationary (starting) or rotating at a different speed (upshifting or downshifting). The clutch is functioning correctly when both the engine and transmission are rotating at the same speed with the clutch engaged. Clutch pedal movement is transmitted by fluid pressure, which actuates the clutch release hub and bearing. The clutch release hub and bearing pushes on the spring center towards the flywheel. The diaphragm spring pivots at the fulcrum, relieving the load on the clutch pressure plate. Steel spring straps riveted in the clutch pressure plate cover pull the clutch pressure plate from the clutch disc, disengaging the engine torque from the transmission.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Internal transaxle components
- Clutch pedal
- Clutch slave cylinder
- Clutch pressure plate
- Clutch disc
PINPOINT TEST G: EXCESSIVE NOISE
-------------------------------------------------
G1 CHECK THE TRANSAXLE NEUTRAL POSITION
- Start the engine with the transaxle in the NEUTRAL position.
- Depress clutch pedal fully.
- Are there noises when the clutch is operated?
Yes
GO to G2.
No
There is a problem with the transaxle. GO to Symptom Chart - Clutch, GO to Symptom Chart - Transaxle or GO to Symptom Chart - NVH, if necessary. Symptom Chart - Clutch Symptom Chart - Transaxle Symptom Chart - NVH
-------------------------------------------------
G2 TEST THE CLUTCH PEDAL FREE TRAVEL
- Press the clutch down manually until resistance is felt, then release it again.
- Measure pedal travel.
- Is the travel within 10 mm (0.40 in)?
Yes
GO to G3.
No
REFER to Clutch, M/T.
-------------------------------------------------
G3 TEST THE CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER WITH RELEASE BEARING
- Remove the transaxle.
- Check the clutch slave cylinder bolts.
- Check the release bearing for wear and rust.
- Are the bolts loose or are there signs of wear or rust?
Yes
TIGHTEN the bolts or INSTALL a new clutch slave cylinder with the release bearing. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to G4.
-------------------------------------------------
G4 TEST THE CLUTCH FRICTION DISK TORSION SPRINGS
- Check torsion springs for wear or damage.
- Do the torsion springs have signs of wear or damage?
Yes
INSTALL a new clutch disc. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
CHECK the crankshaft end play. REFER to Engine.
